2013 2m UKAC

The activity in the 2m UKAC has climbed steadily for a number of years.  This year the number of entrants topped 200 in eight of the twelve sessions and peaked at 224 entries in April. Several entrants regularly commented it was difficult to find a clear frequency to operate on.

The number of multipliers available in each session varied between 24 (in January) and 36 (in June).

As usual, conditions also varied from the very good (September and December) to the not so good.

The club element of the 2m UKAC produced a fierce competition between last year’s winners Bolton Wireless Club (BWC) and the Travelling Wave Contest Group (TWCG). The BWC managed to field 25 different stations this year and TWCG fielded 23 stations.  However, the superior individual results of the TWCG team members enabled them to produce an unbeatable total and are this year’s winners of the G6NB Trophy.

In the AL (10 Watt) section, three stations dominated: G4VPD, G6WRW/P and G4ODA. Mike G4VPD started off the year by winning the first five sessions and ended up winning seven of the nine sessions entered.  This produced a score that simply could not be beaten.

The AR (100 Watt) section witnessed another close battle between M1MHZ, M0BRA and M0BUL.  M0BUL managed to win four sessions, M1MHZ managed to win two sessions and M0BRA managed to win one session. However, to achieve success in the UKAC, consistently high performance is required. Bob G1ZJP operating as M1MHZ produced this year’s winning performance amassing 7907 points, beating last year’s winner M0BRA by 3 points!

It was a different situation in the AO (400 Watt, unlimited antenna) section.  One station (MM0GPZ/P operated by MM0GPZ and GM0LIR) dominated this section and won eight of the twelve sessions thus gaining an unbeatable 8000 points.  Dave G7RAU also won two sessions to come second.

The AX section also produced a runaway winner.  Andy GM4JR won eight of the twelve sessions to gain an unbeatable score of 8000 points.  Clive GM4VVX was the runner-up.

This year’s 2m UKAC was marred by a serious case of cheating, the details of which are available in the Radio Sport column in the January 2014 issue of Rad Com.
