HF Contests Committee. Equipment Coding System

This system has been designed to give an easily identifiable indication of a station's power and antenna system and is used in contest reports.

    First Character - Power

    • 0 0 - 1 Watts
    • 1 1.1 - 5 Watts
    • 2 6 - 20 Watts
    • 3 21 - 100 Watts
    • 4 101 - 400 Watts

    Second Character - Antenna

    • C Centre-fed (Dipole, doublet, G5RV etc.)
    • G Ground Plane or Vertical
    • Y Yagi
    • Q Quad or Loop
    • W Wire (Any other type)

Third Character Number of Antenna Elements

Fourth Character Maximum height of antenna above ground

    • 0 0 - 9 feet
    • 1 10 - 19 feet
    • 2 20 - 29 feet
    • 8 80 - 89 feet
    • 9 90 + feet

For example a station using 100 Watts to a 3 element yagi at 55 feet high would use the code 3Y35 on the cover sheet declaration.

It saves the adjudicators time when they create the listings if the code has already been worked out and put on the cover sheet. By all means describe your station setup in the comments especially if you have a particularly interesting or complicated setup. Remember that you should be declaring your station setup on the cover sheet, especially if you are entering sections that are restricted by power and/or antenna. Faliure to do this may mean that you get classified in the open or unrestricted section of a contest which may not be what you intended!
