1st 1.8 MHz Contest 2009

The conditions and activity levels for the RSGB 1st 1.8MHz contest were down on previous events. There were a total of 95 logs received plus 6 checklogs. Once again, the quantity of Overseas logs exceeded those from the UK. Some familiar callsigns were absent and as a couple of entrants noted – perhaps it was because this contest coincided with Valentines Day!

A high “A” index figure was probably the cause of the poorer conditions experienced. Certainly the overall QSO numbers were down on previous occasions. As in previous years, this contest coincided with the Dutch PACC contest  - which helped to boost the activity levels. There was some DX worked by the UK stations, including 4S7, W1, W8 and W5 call areas.  Despite the poorer conditions, there were some QRP stations that managed to make a healthy number of QSO’s. The highest place QRP station is Eddi DK3UZ, who made a very creditable 8th place running 5 watts from an Elecraft K2.  Not surprisingly, the stations with relatively high aerials and full power made the top scores.

In Section A, (UK), with a score of 970 points, the leader and winner of the Somerset Trophy is Clive Penna GM3POI. In 2nd place, with a score of 947 points is Don Beattie G3BJ and in third spot, with a score of 942 points is Justin Snow G4TSH.

In Section B (Overseas), the leader is Paul O’Kane EI5DI, with a score of 376 points. In 2nd place, with 329 points is Gediminas Lucinskas LY9A. In third place, with 305 points is Fraser Robertson F/G4BJM.

There was one problem that required some additional adjudication care where unfortunately, one G station, instead of using the published RSGB 2-digit area codes, gave out a wrong (3 digit) area code. Consequently, there were some inadvertent incorrect claims resulting from this error.

It was apparent from some of the logs and comments received that there is some confusion regarding what to do when the other station does not send you the expected response. The general rule applies: “log and record whatever they send” and if no serial number is sent, then log that as “000”.

My congratulations to the worthy winners and thanks to everyone that took part. In particular my thanks go to those stations that kindly sent in a checklog.

I look forward to seeing you all in the 2nd 1.8MHz contest in November 2009.

Graham Bubloz G4FNL

Check logs - LA6DW, LY2BNL, PA0RBA, DL4HSI, RN4AK, UX0UW

SOAPBOX:

DJ5HB
FT847  + Dipole 2 x 19.5m around the House.  Very few GMs and north England stations heard

DK3UZ
Elecraft K2, 5 watts out +  80m Guywire Pyramid, fed via open-wire line and remote controlled balanced pi coupler Most of Topband was
unusable here due to QRM
DL2OM
After two hours the band offered none new British call sign anymore and I closed down. A marginally better response yielded the PACC
which I participated in parallely.

DL2ZA
TS 850  +  2 x 19.5 m Doppelzepp Antenna

EI5DI
Hard going this time due to unusually low activity from the UK. Only 6 QSOs in the last two hours.

F/G4BJM
TS870 500W + Inv L

G3BJ
Strange conditions made this hard work !  Long skip at the start and a shortage of some of the usual G entrants meant that it was the    US/VE stations and the PA contest that kept up the interest. A first hour of over 100 QSOs was followed by it taking most of the next 3     hours for the next 100. Some G signals very weak up here in Shropshire.  Note that nearly all the PA stations were only giving their two-digit locator code.  Equipment: FT1000MP MkV, linear, dipole, 90ft vertical and K9AY loop.

G3GLL
FT1000MP + AL811 + Inverted L about 55 ft high. SD worked fine. Local noise level very high.- Slow going after 2300 gave up at 2350 !

G3GMM
High noise level with QSB.  Conditions better in the last hour of the contest.

G3JJZ
IC756 PRO III +  85' LW + Counterpoise

G3LDI
My noise again S-9 and apologies for asking for so many repeats. Peaks covered the essential part of the exchange, strange how that
happens! Several stations refused a QSO because they were only in the PACC test. Only one USA station. Must get the vertical working
for November!

G3LET
K3 + amp 400W + Sloping wire 250 ft. Only squeezed in a half hour or so, but made a nice break. DX activity was there but signals not wonderful

G3LIK
FT1000MP + ground mounted vertical.  Very frustrating at the beginning -  weak G signals. Seemed to improve after midnight. Lot of familiar calls missing from the contest. SD a good logging system

G3NCN
K2 + top fed vertical.  I thought it was a little empty. Seemed to run out of G stations very early.  Those I worked later were obviously latecomers with low serials. Very enjoyable though.

G3RSD
TS830S + top loaded wire. Used SD - worked perfectly

G3SWC
ICOM 756Pro2 + Half wave dipole

G3UFY
Missed the first hour+ - probably would have been the best time for me. Mostly long skip and noise level through the roof.  Tried CQ-ing    - many replies audible but not able to copy under the local noise so went S&P.  Apologies to those I could not copy.

G3UJE
Conditions poor due to solar disturbances.  Lowish activity. First hour busy but activity fell away thereafter.

G3VYI
Homebrew EF91/807 9W TX , Racal RA17 valve Rx! + Marconi aerial. Good fun with all  valve rig, condx good First time used RA17 RX    very nice to use.

G3ZGC/A
IC775DSP 200W  +  Dipole at 50 ft. At G3LLK's QTH. Thanks Gus.  An enjoyable contest.

G3ZRJ
TS850S 80W + Doublet centre at 30 ft. Glad to give away a few points

G3ZVW
Mind-numbingly slow in the final hour, but very nice to work across the pond with my new vertical

G4BUO
Only active for a short time, but G activity seemed very low. Presumably all the romantic G operators were taking their partners out for a Valentines Day meal!

G4BXT
K3 +  Inverted L.  Unfortunate that it did not start earlier as condx seemed good. Usual high suburban S8 noise level. UK activity appeared to be down? Valentine's activity?!

G4BYG
Just a token hour for passing some points away. Skip seemed long with "MOST" UK stations being quite weak.  IC756Pro III 100w into Loaded 60ft vertical. N1MMLogger software.

G4CKH
FT1000MP + 100FT Inverted L

G4DDL
FT2000 + 30m Longwire.  Seemed quieter than usual. Most of the big-guns seemed to be missing (doing WPX RTTY?). Very low at the
end.

G4EBK
FT2000 100w + dipole bent to fit garden max height 30ft Ctr most at 20ft.  Great start for first hour then rubbish.

G4ERW
TS850 + AL811 + 160M Inverted-V dipole at 60ft. It's been many years since I last took part in these RSGB  Top Band contests! Good to be back! As expected, a low dipole is not good for DX - only 2 North American stations and they were hard going !

G4FAL
At least with my low dipole, there was little chance of further snow, as the clouds above Sheffield were absorbing most of my output.    Nice  to get across the pond with the last throw of the dice.

G4FNL
FT1000MP + TL922 Amp + Horizontal Dipole @ 20m + Inverted L at 25m + beverages.   Activity levels from the UK stations was noticeably down on previous events. Thank goodness for the PACC contest that created some additional QSO's. I used SD for logging.
G4RCG
ORION II +  Dipole @ 60'.  Started good as normal but died a death after 1st hour.  Conditions were marginal, lots of EU stations but not that many G's.  I say this every time that it should start an hour earlier and finish at midnight, the last hour is always a waste of time. Used SD and was faultless as usual.

G4RHR
IC7400 + Inverted L.  My first entry into the 160m contest and thoroughly  enjoyed it. Used SD as my log and found it very easy to use. Even worked EI5DI as a bonus!

G6CSY
Only available for last 30 mins of contest. Built & assembled at midnight, a 25m long top-loaded-sloping-inverted=lazy-L antenna. It worked - sort of. A very polite contest.

GM0ELP
K3 + Inv L antenna. Put up an Inv L antenna over the top of the roof with the help of some fishing line and a tennis ball. Probably very    inefficient due to not much in the way of ground plane. I didn't understand the rules in terms of what exchange to get from PA stns and some flat refused to give me a serial number. Key clicks were a huge problem from some well known (loud) G3 calls especially     between 00:00 and 01:00UTC. Thanks to all who worked me.

GM3POI
K3 + Amp + Vertical + 4SQ + Beverages. Poor Condx with a high K index plus the date slowed this one down.

GM3ZRT
IC751a + doublet

GM4UBJ
IC7400 + Extended 80 OCF Dipole. Many more EU stations worked this time not so many UK districts heard. Never heard  anyone above
1850khz on CW. Many PA stations in my log this time. Used SD for logging as usual with no probs.  CU in November?

M0CEF
Some QSOs before bedtime. Rig 5 W, Ant 22 m wire. Hard going with all the QRO stations around. At least some new postcodes and PA  provinces.

OK1ARO
FT-840 + LW

OK1FKD
QRP- Elecraft K2  5W  +  LW 42m

OK1MCW
TS850 + 15m Vertical top loaded. There were so many UK stations in the 70's!!

OK1XR
TS850, 100W LW60m

OK2HZ
100 W, Sloper 40 M

PA0FEI
TS530S, 100 W HF, longwire.  Got some multipliers for the PACC Contest in your contest.

PA0MIR
All stations worked received the sent QSO number and for PACC the NH province indicator. Had 2 logs open on the computer to log the entries for both contests. A pity participation from UK seemed pretty low and did not hear any really high QSO numbers. But always fun to be there.

RW3AI
Icom 7800, Ant LW 120 m

UA2FL
TS-940SAT + Inv. Vee.

VE3CUI
FT-980 + Homebrewed 2 x 813 Kilowatt Linear Amp +  3-El Triangular Phased Inv "L" Array (135-Degrees).  I did my best to generate     interest amongst fellow members of The Contest Club of Ontario here to take part this year---and I think I succeeded, too!   I heard VE3ZI & VE3FAS working the lads, so I'm quite happy! Conditions "so-so" here. I wish "G's" listened more!!

YO5AJR
Good contest.
