2nd 1.8 MHz Contest 2009
The 2009 2nd 1.8Mhz contest attracted 104 entrants. Conditions were
reasonable with strong inter-G working as well as interesting DX. G3LET
was the only UK station to work JA's around 2200z, others worked FG,
VP2V, ZC4VJ and TF. Later in the contest good openings to W/VE added to
the interest.
Like the ever popular 80M Club Championship
contests, the RSGB 1.8Mhz contests offer an opportunity for a moderate
station to benefit from inter-UK contacts, whilst DX stations also
contribute for bonus points. This contest coincided with the All
Austrian 160M contest which no doubt increased the number of European
entrants.
By far the majority of logs were received by the
RSGB HF Contest Committee Robot entry system, greatly simplifying the
adjudication process and allowing a faster turn around of results.
Several minor keyboard errors noted as well as invalid district areas
resulted in lost points (it's always worth manually checking the logs
before submitting for the more obvious errors.)
The UK
section continues to be dominated by GM3POI (KW). Clive Penna wins the
Victor Desmond Trophy for the leading UK score, and also the Maitland
Trophy for leading GM in both RSGB 1.8Mhz Contests of 2009. GM3POI led
G3LET (Peter Hobbs - RH) by 41 QSOs, followed by G3BJ (Don Beattie - SY)
In Section B (Overseas), the winner is Paul O’Kane EI5DI, followed by F5VHY (Dennis Andrews) and DK2FG (Peter Schuebeler).
Thanks to all who took part, and I look forward to seeing you all in the first RSGB 1.8Mhz contest of the next decade.

SOAPBOX:
DK3UZ Elekraft K2 5W output. 80m Guywire pyramid fed via open-wire line and remote-controlled balanced coupler.
DK8NT My
2nd RSGB 160m contest, now with a just 6 m high helical vertical
instead of the 41 m long windom. QSO count increased from 32 to 46 --
not bad with a constant S9 noise level. Calling CQ however was
frustrating almost nobody answered. And as the 3rd hour just added one
QSO, I stopped early calling GB and jumped into the All Austrian
contest where participation wasn't high any more over 7 hours after it
had started. The highlight finally came at sunrise working N2KW. An
interesting night!
DL1LH FT-2000 inv-L antenna
DL2ZA TS850 2x 195m Dipole
DL6MTA Omni-VI + 120m L/W up 10m
DL7DZ Contest is OK! 73!
G0IBN very disappointed with my score due to heavy QRM
G0MTN Quick Search and Pounce session with a very low non-resonant antenna after a night out.
G3GLL SD worked well as usual after I made the computer work properly ! Slow going after 2315 - gave in at 2330 !
G3GMM TS 520 S + Inverted-Vee doublet
G3JFH Great to have chance to air the call belonging to the late Terry.
G3KKP Logged with SD - worked perfectly.
G3KLH Used 80m dipole with extensions at shoulder height
G3LDI Rain = S9+20db noise. Sorry for the repeat requests etc.
G3LET Only
40% of QSOs were with UK stations so the overseas support was greatly
appreciated. A lot of easy countries were missing but enjoyed the
short JA opening at their dawn. How about using the RSGB rather
than ARRL countries list?
G3LHJ First time in Top Band for ages still not a good ant for this band - but did what I could and enjoyed
G3LIK Some good conditions until QRN from rain took over. My best effort to date so pleased. Lots of familiar calls who had good antennas. Great to have SD for logging
G3OLB Choice
of 2 antennas tonight dipole at 60'for Eu and inverted 'L' at 80' for
DX. Nice to work 20 US/Canadians. Where on earth is '5E8B5Y'? - that's
what he sent several times?
G3PDH Busy start with the OE contest on but very slow after 1130, maybe 3 hours is sufficient for this one.
G3SWC Had strong QRM from neighbour's TV necessitating many requests for repeats. Thankyou for those that had the patience!
G3TBK Inverted-L
70 ft vertical section but only 3 radials! Just home from VP2M in time
for Contest. Good job this event is well supported in Eu and N.A.
G3TXF My
first RSGB 160m Contest in several years. Good fun but the QSO rate
slowed up during the last hour. Being called by FG/F6AUS added some
excitement to the proceedings!
G3UFY FT1000MP + Amp + Inverted-L (for TX) Good workout for new mini (5ft-per-side)tuned loop receiving antenna.
G3VYI Vertical
not ideal for G contest! Good to work some DX. G QSO's hard to
come by in 2nd hour. Good condx I think and good ops!
G3WRR Not a serious effort - just on to make a few QSOs. Surprised at the number of Europeans about!
G3ZGC/A /A from G3LLK'S QTH. Thank's Gus. Rig IC775DSP 200w to Dipole up 50 ft. Some good scores on tonight.
G3ZRJ Sorry
i had to finish early due to domestic qrm. Glad to give out some
points. Good to see so many eu stations supporting the contest.
Heard several w and ve stns
G4AIU Used SD 14.29
G4ARI Band was very noisy but lots of activity. Great fun can't wait till next 1.8 contest
G4BJM Visitors so part time entry
G4CKH First
hours operating was good with plenty of stations to work it then
slackend off this was probably due to my poor antenna allthough i did
get a call from a ve only operated for the first 3 hours enjoyable as
allways.
G4DDL Very poor condx with deep QSB at times. Some local QSOs very heard as a result. Pleased to work Russia on this band though
G4EBK Only
three hours operating it got very slow by midnight. Always a struggle
for me with an inv vee dipole at 30 feet high at the centre. Very
pleased to work one VE and one W.
G4FAL Top band was a bit noisier this time. Possible to make some progress with a low dipole.
G4RCG Went
great for the 1st hour then contacts slowed to a snails pace as is
normal in this test. Glad there were the europeans on their test as
well as the G's were not there in great numbers. Nice to work some W's
and Ve's as well. Thought condx were quite good
G4RYV/P Temporary location. Very high noise level on band. Despite few contacts enjoyed taking part
G6CSY Running
5W QRP from an IC-7400 to a 'special' aerial for top band a vertical/6m
+ horizontal/8m + horizontal/1m + horizontal/5m + sloping/2m top load
coil. Mananged to triple 1st contest QSO number but missed E77DX for a
new DXCC!
GM3WOJ First time ever in this contest (I think) - good first hour then very slow afterwards.
GM3YEH Low
noise level for a change. Ran out of stations to work well before the
end. Need to get the dipole higher than 20 feet next time!
GM4FAM Very enjoyable as always but very slow last hour.
GM4UBJ Slow
start this year condx very noisy and again a gale blew up just in time.
Is it just me or are there a lot of g3s about ? Nice to work so many on
top band with my restricted aerials. SD worked fine as usual thanks to
all who worked me..see you next time 73 Bill
HA5AZC FT-100d dipole.
LY4CW Icom 756 dipole
M0AAA Very
pleased with my low dipole at 35 feet. I was going to fly the helekite
with the 60 metre vertical but the rain would have brought it down to
earth. Still good fun. Ready for a good nights sleep now.
M0CEF Rig 5 W Ant 22 m wire. Put my book aside for some QSO before bedtime ;-)
M0CNP Struggled
to get started (finger trouble) then the band closed at my QTH about
2245 so went QRT. But thoroughly enjoyed this my first venture into
160m CW contesting. Thanks everyone for your patience and points.
M0NQN Hard work - 25W with a less than perfect Doublet!
MA0BQI Great
fun from the holiday cottage on the Isle of Mull. Used MP and an
Inverted L on a 12m SpiderPole with an assortment of radials on the
ground.
N2KW A Certificate for high score on each continent would encourage participation!
OK1ARO nice contest as usual good condx here
OK1KZ Rig-TRX TS430S 100W. Ant Dipole G5RV
PA0FEI Good activity on Top Band!
PA0INA Always nice to meet friends on the air
PA0MIR This
year just arrived home as the RSGB test started after celebrating the
4th anniversary of granddaughter so no problem with the startnumber.
PA2REH Nice to work on 160m. Cu next time folks
PA3FKN Nice contest again. Was there less activity than last year or do I have to check my antennas?
RA6XB 50 watts
RV3MR IC-718 dipol
RW3AI Icom 7800 Ant LW 120 m
RW3DA IC775DSP inv-L
S57DX Just give out some points.
US1IV TNX for nice contest !
VE3CUI Well
most every "G" station I heard this year I managed to work! Kudos to
the lads on your side for taking the time to listen for stations from
across the pond. I hope the activity level from "VE3"-land was up this
year too compared to others (I tried!).
VE3ZI Nearly doubled my previous best in this contest but conditiions were nothing like as good as they have been recently.
