UA3VVB
Thanks to all UK stations, who answered my weak signals. Rig consists
of FT-817ND (5w)+winkeyer+Hy-Gain TH3MK4+MixW2.18
Propagation was for a few hours to UK, also was heard VK4 stn through
the long path, TG9NX CQings, VU2PAI pile up for NA stations, 7Z1HL
worked, and a coupe of strong stations from Cyprus. That`s all about
21MHz. Anfortunately 10 metersband didn`t give any chance for QSO
ability. 73 and thanks a lot for the Contest.
UA4FCO Very nice contest !!! tu

perhaps its not my lucky day ?
ZC4LI Not much going on 10m, I only heard a 4Z and a ZS. Thanks to all
concerned in running the contest. 73 Steve.

21/28
MHz Contest October 2009
The 2009 event proved to be another challenging year for everyone
taking part, however there are now some encouraging positive signs for
the future. On 21MHz, QSO numbers for most entrants were up,
contacts were made throughout the day into Europe, including the last
hour, and several participants took advantage of much better
propagation to North America to set up good run rates. Sadly
28MHz wasn't playing the same game yet and only a handful of contacts
were made on that band.
Leading the Open section was a
mixed-mode entry from MW0TTG operated by GW4BVE, G3VDB and G3KAF, and
the only UK station to pick up more than a solitary contact on
28MHz. CW-only was the most popular mode in the Open section
and
leading the field was David Cree G3TBK who takes the T E Wilson G6VQ
Trophy. Last year's winner Peter Hobbs G3LET was not far
behind
with his Restricted section entry.
Another
Restricted section entrant Darren Collins G0TSM takes the Whitworth
Trophy for the highest SSB score by a single operator.
Operating
portable from the Severn Estuary with 40W to a quarter wave GP, this
demonstrated the advantage of having your feet in sea water.
The
Powditch Trophy, for the highest single operator score on 28MHz, is
awarded jointly to G3LET and Ken Randall G3RFH for each managing to
pick up one elusive contact on the band, both on CW. Others
reported monitoring the band but failing to make any
contacts.
Certificates also go to Tim Raven G4ARI and Nick Totterdell G4FAL.
From
the Overseas perspective, it was to be expected that stations located
in the eastern Mediterranean would have an extensive opening to the UK,
and so it was with a good Open section score achieved by Andy Chadwick
ZC4VJ in a 6.5 hour spell. Steve Hodgson ZC4LI was the
runner-up
and leading CW entrant. In the Restricted section Zakhar Flom
4Z5AX using a GP antenna made 90% of his CW QSOs by lunchtime but
picked up a few more in the early afternoon.
The
highest mixed-mode score was made by G Evstegneeve RN4AO and the 10W
Low Power section had sufficient entrants for a CW certificate to
Alexei Skripalev UA3VVB.
Stations further afield
enjoyed longer openings than recent years, for 9M2CNC this was from
0850 to 1420, and there was good support from the USA and Canada with
all US call areas worked. Thanks to all the Overseas stations
for
their logs, and to those that didn’t send a log but were clearly active
for an extended period.
Log keeping was generally good,
there were only a few claims this time for UK to UK contacts, but once
again some valuable multipliers were lost for failing to record the
correct RST sent. Signal strengths were often weak and
accurate
reports were being sent.
John Cockrill, G4CZB
SOAPBOX (UK):
2E0RCV Only 1 station heard in times QSX on band Just a token entry to
support contest!
G0IBN Very hard slog not enjoyable
G0MTN Made a few QSOs, then got on with a busy day's DIY and housework!
G0ORH
Condx pretty dire, livened up when 15m open to NA. Nice to work some
old friends still at it with this contest! Not all gloomy though, 9J,
VU, 9M2, Z29, etc
G3GLL SD worked well as usual
G3JRM
We both enjoyed this contest and being the first real contest for my
pal it was great to work some REAL dx vy poor conditions on 10 metres
one contact though 15m gave the best results for some very pleasing dx
sd faultless as usual any problems were operator error
G3LET
A great improvement in conditions this year - if only this could have
been matched by the activity both UK and overseas. If this
event
is not to die on its feet some encouragement for the overseas entrants
is needed perhaps in the form of something more than a certificate.
G3LHJ Quite a struggle but enjoyable, pity 10m would not play
but did miss 9J2BO there, lets hope condxs better next year.
G3RFH
Very quiet at start but got better late in the morning and into the
afternoon. Some Brazilians heard in the evening but they were chasing
DX and not interested in contest working (or else they couldn't hear
me!) Made more QSOs this year so maybe the new sunspot cycle is kicking
in.
G3RLE FT 920, 100 Watts, Dipole at 9m.
G3TBK
Great to be able to run States again on 15 - especially the W6's. Still
zero on 28MHz though FT1000Mp, 400W Amp, A4S at 60 feet
G3VPW
Didn't expect coditions to be great, however the DX did show up from
time to time with long periods of nothing. Didn't hear or work anyone
on 10m Enjoyed the contest nevertheless, look forward to a more
contacts next year!
G3VQO Only had a brief period available at the start of the contest,
but 15m sounded encouraging after months of silence
G3VYI Lots of weak DX if patient! no 10m sigs again here few W's, 5R8 a
bonus, and Z29 !!
G3WRR
Nothing at all heard on 10m except another G calling CQ. Conditions
seemed pretty flat. Just a few QSOs fitted in between the Sunday chores
G4ARI Condtions were better than expected 15 stayed open right until
the end of the contest but nothing on 10 all day
G4EBK Things can only get better.
G4ERW Only operated for total of 30 mins during the day to give points
away. Conditions reasonable but activity poor.
G4FAL
15m was better than last year despite the continuing lack of sunspots.
I was pleased to work at least one station on each continent (apart
from Antarctica!). The band opened to SA quite late into the evening
and stayed open after the contest finished whereas in recent years it
has been dead by 1700 UTC. 10m was hopeless - I simply heard nothing
although I tried calling several times. I used two VFOs most of the
time so I could look for any new stations whilst calling. Had quite a
few contacts in the - by the way, I am in a contest - category. But as
things were slow there was time for a quick chat before springing this
surprise. Anyway, we keep hanging on waiting for this contest to
improve - will 2010 be the year when these bands are both wide open to
the UK?
G4FSU Casual entry, checking the radio between
chores. 28MHz comlpetely dead here. 21MHz quiet although was open to W6
later in the day. More a case of lack of activity than lack of sunspots.
G4IUF Had to go out and missed 5 hours sadly. Enjoyed using SD
G4NXG/M SD worked without a problem as always. Pity that I couldn't
spend more time in the contest this year.
G4WGE Soooooo much better than last year!
G4XPE
No opening heard on 10M during my short operating time Power

Didn't copy anything on 10m or any SSB on 15m. I'm glad some
of
the DX stations were calling CQ - my CW isn't up to it!
G8ZRE Hard going very quite SD Easy to use.
GM3CFS Not a well supported contest with poor/fair condx.
Better support from other societies needed next time
GM4SID Just had a few minutes to give out a number or two
Hope the Checklog is useful.
GW0TSM/P
Ant was a 1/4 GP sitting in the Severn Estuary. Only 40W out from the
radio as the IC7000 didnt like 12.6V batteries. I worked some
W's
and the sig would have been going through the sea wall and then in
land. Best QSO was a 15min natter about verts with Willy
TO7RJ.
M0AAA Very dissapointed with band conditions again this year.
M0CNP Hard going all day, with band finally going dead at about 1700
when I went QRT Nothing heard all day on 10m

M0RYB ICOM Pro 3 at 10w; Steppir 4-el yagi. VK9, VU2 and Z2 were nice
