Second
Ropoco Contest 2009
Some initial confusion was caused by the website not directing entrants
to the robot for their submission. This was swiftly corrected, and the
adjudicator submitted all of the early e-mail entries to the robot to
ensure consistency.
In all forty-eight logs were received,
one more than in 2008, producing a database of 2211 QSO records to
check. Of these, it was possible to cross-reference 1814 contacts by
comparing both logs. A total of 130 QSOs were disallowed for received
errors in callsign or postcode, or for a matching entry not being found
in the other log. Where the adjudicated scores of stations are equal,
they are ranked in descending number of errors in the final listing.
Duplicate contacts, and contacts with non-UK stations (which do not
attract points) were not treated as errors.
There were three
“perfect” logs, from Don Beattie G3BJ, Tom Cannon G0VQR (operating as
M0AAA) and Ed Taylor GW3SQX. Don receives the G3XTJ Memorial Trophy for
the highest-scoring of these. Well done to all three for such an
achievement in less-than-ideal band conditions. Meanwhile, the overall
leader on the day was also Don G3BJ, equal on points with Brian Gale
G3UJE, but with less errors.
The G5MY Trophy, awarded to the
entrant with the highest aggregate score in RoPoCo1 and RoPoCo2, goes
to Don Beattie G3BJ, who had error-free logs in both events.
Congratulations!
Entrants are reminded that the Cabrillo
format uses spaces as field delimiters. Each postcode is one field, and
therefore should not contain spaces. Such unexpected spaces may have
unpredictable consequences when processed by the adjudication software.
Logs submitted containing postcodes with embedded spaces have been
corrected by the adjudicator this time, but there are no such
guarantees for the future!

SOAPBOX:
G0IBN Lost comms between computer and radio so had to do all by paddle key/sk never had odd postcodes before but a few this time
G0MTN More
QSOs from 2nd VFO than 1st. Constant SO2V + CQ'ing from the start.
Disappointed with result - I've done much better than this in the past.
G0TZZ Slow but enjoyable
G0WHO Not enough participants hard work in the second hour
G3BJ Rather quiet here - 59 in two hours is a bit slow !
G3GLL Couldn't spend much time at it. Just helping to keep ROPOCO going !
G3JRM Reasonable
conditions for the first hour after which activity fell away guess the
usual sunday morning ROPOCO conditions here on the most eastern tip of
the UK
G3LHJ Enjoyable as always ran out of stations to worked at the end had the few usual crazy post codes Hi.
G3LIK Rather
slow guess people on holiday this time of year Noticed lack of the 2E0
G7 G8 calls this time A lot of weird post codes as though someone was
trying to test the system out so hope they come unstuck
G3TBK FT1000MP
Dipole at 55 feet. Don't remember seeing so many hideous codes in the
past! I would hate to be a postman! As ever too few stations on maybe
next years truncated events will bring more adrenalin-rush!
G3UJE FT1000 Mk5 Field Loop at 75'.Paddle + Armstrong logging system (paper!) worked fine.
G3VIP FT301S + Homebrew PA 100W - 40M LW - Homebrew logger Good selection of stations few weird codes everything as usual
G3VYI Very
quiet condx using new ant as old tree fell down! Used manual keying as
its better for you but harder! Good to work some in last 30 mins!
G3WYW Enjoyed
it. This is one of my favourite contests because of the accuracy needed
over speed! Busy right to the end. Band seemed good North South Strong
GM and North not too many from Wales. FT1KMP5 Doublet 150W SD
G3YEC Nice little contest although visitors kept coming up to the shack to see what I was doing !! SD good as ever.
G3ZGC Running
IC7700 100-200w at times. To 132 ft of wire wrapped into garden. QSO 52
was very difficult and most likely worng. Sorry but this is a noisy
QTH! As enjoyable as ever but its very spooky getting your own postcode
back wrong!
G4AFS Nice to get the Contest RF generated Adrenalin again.
G4BLI Thoroughly enjoyed the contest again this year. SD performed very well
G4BVY Lots more
"interesting" post codes this time !!
G4CZB Great fun as usual.
G4ERW Enjoyable - but slow going!
G4FAL Great
to see a small increase in activity - is it the early start or the cw
that puts people off? Received one Zero as a T but logged a Zero -
should have questioned it but didn't bother.
G4FNL A bit slow going. I heard my own post code sent back to me but a bit magnled! Thanks to all for the QSOs.
G4FUI Normal summer 80m propagation OK in first hour - NBG in second!
G4LMW Another
enjoyable ROPOCO. Would be great if we could get a few more interested.
Had hoped to run 400W but the newly re-furbished FL-7000 doesn't like
my LF dipole. 100w from Ten-Tec Orion.
G4OGB Old age
is creeping up!! only remembered the 'test at 0745. Prop. to GW
seemed poor when 'SQX couldn't get my exchange and I think 'ARI sent a
correction but he suffered deep QSB. Then 10 over 9 QRM came on
intermittantly, requiring many requests for repeats. So no prizes this
time.....again!
G4OOC SD was a joy to use no gliches just perfect highly recommended
G4RCG SD
work great as always with these post codes could have kicked myself as
I got a call wrong not to far into the test. There seemed the normal
calls on still not many new ones but still enjoyed the test
G4XPE As
ever my apologies to my first contact; starting with 'de 73' in CW does
often create confusion hi ! Rig
IC-7200 Power 100w RF output . Antenna trap dipole
inverted vee apex 3.81 meters agl. Key ex-WW11 'bathtub' straight key.
Very slow start and propogation tailed off in the last 30 minutes or
so.
G6CSY The RoPoCo gods listened to my
soapbox comments from the 1st contest. My third contact and I got my
own postcode back! A very enjoyable contest without the usual EU QRM
[just QRN this time around!]
GM3POI Please move this to Sunday evening 19-21z say in Sept and how about allowing dupe contacts after 1 hour?
GM3YEH Nice to exchange a few laughs at some of the corrupt postcodes! Very few contacts during the second hour.
GM4SID A Bit of a bore because of the lack of stations to work. SD worked perfectly as usual.
GW3SQX I
thought conditions must be terrible. Then it became obvious I had
an antenna problem! Oh well there's always next time.
M0CNP Band closed at 0845. A good and challenging contest
MM0ROV Found
it hard going - SD gave me spurious post codes after using ZAP
function and had to correct with hand key which was also playing up.
(Not a good day)
