I was working the California QSO Party when EU opened up off the back of my beam. I turned it around, opened up a new contest log in N1MM Logger, and worked UK stations on SSB and CW for a few hours. Then the band closed down and that was the end of it! It was a tantalizing peak into better conditions in the future.

This was hard to ignore. Signals from the UK were outstanding on 15, most everyone worked off the side of my beam (which was pointed towards California). Nothing heard on a quick spin on 10.

21/28 MHz Contest October 2010

There is a saying that impending execution concentrates a man's mind so the planned deletion of this event from the contest calendar may have contributed to the substantial increase in entries in all sections.  In particular, both the UK and Overseas Open sections saw an almost three fold increase and overall the total number of logs received were double those of 2009.

Another factor may have been the continued improvements in band conditions, on 21MHz scores were up again this year and with the first hour overlapping with the phone leg of the Oceania contest, those using SSB were able to pick up some valuable multipliers.  On the down side 28 MHz contacts were again few and far between, but there were openings to Asia/Australasia, South America and Eastern Europe.

The leading station in the UK Open section was a mixed-mode entry from Clive Penna GM3POI and in second place was a phone entry from Stephen Redmond MW0ZZK.  Stephen therefore takes the Whitworth trophy for the highest placed single operator using SSB only.  Stephen is also awarded the Powditch Trophy for the highest single operator score on 28 MHz, regardless of mode.  Stephen picked up VK and UN in the early morning then in the last half hour an opening to South America yielded PY, LU and CE for a winning score of 75 points.

The UK Open section completed a clean sweep of the Trophies this year with David Cree G3TBK retaining the T E Wilson G6VQ Trophy for the highest CW-only score for a single operator.  In the UK Restricted section Mike Franklin G3VYI leads the field with an all CW entry; Tim Raven G4ARI was not far behind in second place with his mixed-mode score and leading the SSB-only field was Lionel Roithmeir MU0GSY.

The overseas sections were better represented from Asia this year, reflecting some limited openings to that region although not sufficient to produce any scores to seriously challenge Europe, but thanks to all those sending in entries.  North American stations also feature in large numbers in the logs received and there were some creditable scores entered from that continent where again propagation to the UK was limited.  Topping the Open section with mixed-mode was EO3Q operated by Ruslan Chernyavskye UR3QCW, the leading SSB entry was from Vasily Bardin RU3SD and Steve Hodgson ZC4LI repeated last year’s success in being the highest placed CW-only station.  The lead station in the Overseas Restricted section was that of Mitrut Marius YO3CZW using SSB with the highest mixed-mode station of Valery Bobrov RW3AI being in second place.  The final certificate in this section is awarded to Matija Vierda 9A3VM as the leading CW-only entrant.

Last year the 10W Low Power sections were not well supported with just one entry from the UK and seven from overseas.  However, this year there was more competition with CW being the most popular mode.  This enabled certificates to be awarded to Ian Frith G4GIR and Malen Gospodinov Georgiev LZ1MG.  One other certificate goes to Rumen Stefanov LZ2RS as the leading mixed-mode station from overseas.

On the whole the standard of logs received was very good with only a few participants losing any significant points.  Unfortunately one overseas station did not record any of the district codes sent by UK stations so could not be assigned any score, and again points and multipliers were lost by the receiving station for not logging the correct RS(T) sent.

Many participants will already know there has been a last minute reprieve for this contest and with band conditions definitely now on an upward slope there should be the potential for even higher scoring rates on 21MHz and maybe even a decent run on 28MHz in 2011.

Thanks to 2E0TQR, DL2AMD, G3LZQ, PA0LOU, R2SA, RA3FH, RV1AE, UA3OQ and YL3DX for their useful checklogs.

Best conditions found before lunch - HV power line noise increased with rain and then could only hear S8-9 signals
Called CQ several times on 10m but was like trying to raise the dead

G0HVQ
Disappointed that the contest is going just after solar minimum it was always hard for the smaller stations to make QSOs in the quiet years. My first entry for a while good to see condx picking up although 10m still quiet - did hear a couple of VK8s at the end of their Oceania contest. 15m was the bread-and-butter
for most QSOs and nice to have a leisurely contest for a change - enjoyable event to just pop in and out of the shack every few hours.

First and last 21/28 Contest for me! Spent the previous 24 hours in the Oceania DX Contest which overlapped this one by one hour.
Hardly any sleep from 0700 Saturday to midnight Sunday! Not good at my 73 years :-) This contest proved that (a) my QTH is abysmal (very difficult the the West) and (b) that my antennas even worse. Tribanders don't work at 4 feet above the roof
of the house. I must do a G4FAL and buy a contest QTH! 28MHz poor (only 2 QSOs) but 21MHz very good to Far East at the start with many JAs VU E21 etc. Nice to see a classic greyline opening in early evening down to ZS 9J2 etc followed by Caribbean until the band closed with me at 1830z. I owe my XYL big time for feeding me in the shack for almost 36 hours!

G3RFH
Not too bad in morning but after lunch very quiet
and hard work. Nothing heard on 10metres despite
making lots of CQ calls. Guess the sunspots have not
been awakened yet.
Sorry to see this contest being dropped - hopefully it may be re-instated at a later date

G3SEM
Elecraft K3 400w Linear 3 elem steppIR at 55ft.
Tough going. Not helped by neighbours breakthrough on TV and phone, so had to QRT well before end.
It would be a pity for the contest to stop ....just because its hard shouldn't be the reason to kill it.
May thanks to the invigilators all your hard work is much appreciated

G3SJJ
Nice condx on 15m. Nil on 10m but it wasn't until half way through that I realised that I was on the dummy load on that band. Doh!! K3 Acom 1000 A4S. N1MM worked flawlessly as ever. With potential better
conditions and increased UK support it may be worth re-considering not scrapping this event.

G3SVD
Disappointing condx on 10m and not all that good on 15m I was hoping for better taking into account the recent incease in solar activity. I will be sorry to see this contest end as I used to articipate as a SWL
in the late 50s early 60s. I hope it is replaced with a new contest having an attraction to newer amateurs and that will be less influenced by solar activity ie will still be worthwhile entering during solar minimums.

G3TBK
Much more activity this year- PLEASE DON'T KILL THIS EVENT Several stations sent "TRC" some USA sent state! All logged as RX Good opening to S. America in last few hours.

G3TXF
Let's think of something better than "UK Districts" (which no-one 'collects' for any award) for RSGB Contests ... WAB Areas or larger Grid Squares maybe?

G3VYI
1 QSO on 10 ! VP8!
Some DX always enjoyed this contest.
Slow going but condx not great. Good to work W's but little else outside russia! Will miss it next year!

G3WRR
Not a serious entry (fairly obviously) but thought I would come on for a few QSOs in the last ever 21/28 MHz.Conditions seemed indifferent - zippo (except one G) heard on 10m.
Tentec Orion 1 to 50ft sloping longwire.

G3ZGC
Rig IC7700 set to 200w to dipole up about 18 ft.
Very windy at the start and antenna was nearly breaking. However managed 43 QSOs. Nothing heard on 10m other than G stations. Highlight was being called by a JA.

G4AMT
CW only entry - no 28MHz QSOs.
Good fun - but pity not more support.
K3 to single wire loops at 40ft.

G4ARI
What a pity this is the last
I have thoroughly enjoyed this contest as I have done in previous years. A sad loss to the RSGB calendar

G4DDX
I found conditions very poor and had limited time.
Sending in log to make up numbers.

G4DJX
Limited time to operate

G4EBK
100 watts 40 mtr inv vee dipole at 30 Ft ctr.

G4FAL
10m was very active at 8pm on Saturday so it was disappointing that the band dried up early on Sunday. I did hear VU2PTT calling at one point but by the time I had finished a QSO on 15m and moved to 10m he
had vanished. So just one JA6 and a UA9 on 10m. The one-hour overlap with Oceania DX yielded some splendid SSB contacts on 15m. At 8:20 UTC the power went off so I ran on a petrol generator from 8:30 until
10:45. The noise level dropped noticeably as all the neighbours computers etc. went off! Europe was a bit disappointing - the skip was probably too long for most of the day. It was good to work all continents and many stations were happy to move to the other mode to help my country and their UK district multipliers. Finishing with California QSO party Qs was interesting - some expressed surprise at my serial numbers not knowing that they were not just for California!
So it's farewell to the 21/28 contest. I for one will miss it.

G4FSU
The last one! True to form for the last few years, 28 dead. Some interesting DX around on 21 but s..l..o..w...

G4IUF
A lot better than last year
Enjoyed using SD. QSO 15 & 75 would not give serial.

G4IWO
Hw8 vertical ground mounted

G4KNO
Ground-mounted 1/4-wave verticals plus low sunspots equals boring on these bands. Difficult to improve on this situation at this QTH.

G4LZZ
ICOM IC746 + half-wave dipole in the loft.

G4RCG
Thought conditions were going to be really good starting off with JA's but alas it was not so, very slow going as its been for the past few years.

G4ZVB
Yaesu FTdx401 15M dipole up 12m 100W
Conditions better than previous years - able to work
both Asia and West Coast at the same time. Sadly no
local Europeans heard for those all important
multipliers. Shame this contest will be no more.

G6TW
10m no openings

G7DDN
Just giving a few points away today.

G8JXV
Very enjoyable with the opportunity to having the DX
call you! I hope that the contest can be retained in
some form. Nothing heard on 10m - maybe next year will be better!

GI4DOH
K3 G3TPW CobWebb up 35ft

GM3POI
not a good idea to remove this Contest. Instead let any
one work anyone for one point and UK be worth 10 points with post codes the mults.

GM3WOJ
Good fun but condx non-existent on 10m. 15m reasonably good. Thanks everyone for the QSOs.

GM4UBJ
15m open 10m dead I wish I had more time !

GW0GEI
A casual entry in the last 21/28 contest. 100w into temp 80m dipole at new qth in west Wales. Ft1000mp mk5 field plus microkeyer. Mainly stuck to 15m cw but had the odd contact on ssb, with several gottaways due to the low power / alligators. Heard gm3woj and several gw and g stations on 15m cw plus one gw on 10m cw.Started late, stopped several times, and gave up around 1830 after finally working usa for a new mult. Still enjoy this contest so shame it is finishing.

GW4BLE
Just a dabble for an hour or two Sunday afternoon....enjoyed this contest immensely back in the 70s/80s. This was going to be a check-log for
'old times sake' but an email log entry is just as easy (unlike 30 years ago!) Have a feeling the cabrillo claimed score might be calculated wrongly though...

GW4EVX
Just giving points away.
Hope the contest is not deleted from the calendar!

M0AAA
I have put zero points next to the EA6AZ contact. I was
not sure if he was working me. I hope this contest starts up again when we get further up the sun spot cycle. Some very good DX about this year. The USA stations never let us down.

M0CNP
Very hard going and still 10m was yet again
silent. Good fun though. Thanks for points

M0KIS
Yaesu Ft857D HB trap/fan dipole

M0TTG
Enjoyable contest with significantly more activity than in the past few years. We here all think it would be a great shame to drop this contest especially as future conditions should be improving. Perhaps consideration could be given to amending the scoring system to increase points for working G's / include 20m and to allow points for inter-UK working. Please reconsider dropping this contest!
Tall Trees Contest Group:G3KAF/G3UJE/G3VDB/G3VOU/M0VAA/G8APB.

M5ARC
Elecraft K3 10w to a Spider Beam at 50ft. First time I've done a QRP. Fun & suprising.

MW0LAO
easy reliable workhorse thanks
