1st 144MHz Backpackers Contest of 2009

Twenty stations competed for honours in the 1st 144MHz Backpackers contest of 2009. This year, there are only two sections, 3W and 10W. Operation from or near a vehicle is not allowed in the 3W section.

The majority of the entrants had to endure poor weather conditions and several stations had to abandon their sites before the end of the contest because of strong winds, driving rain and low temperatures. One station reported S9+ static rain for over 30 minutes; after which he gave up and went home to get dry! There was also little DX about.

The overall standard of logging was poor with an average of 11.5% of points lost. The incorrect copying of Call Signs and Locators caused the majority of the errors. However, five logs had no errors at all - well done. At the other end of the scale, the least accurate log had almost 73% of points deducted.

The 3B was won by the Malvern Hills `B', GW4IDF/P with Tom Read, M1EYP/P in second place.

The 10H section was won by Rhys Thomas, GW4RWR/P with Paul Selwood, G8BGV/P in second place.
