144MHz CW 2009

After last year's disappointing entry level it was great to see a good turn out this year, despite conditions being pretty flat. 25 logs were received, a 270% increase on last year! This year's entry is also 47% higher than any other year on record (going back to 1997).

With all the extra entrants UK activity was better than in previous years, but the core of activity is always in mainland Europe for the Marconi Memorial Contest, which runs concurrently with the RSGB contest. All UK logs have been forwarded to the Italian national society, ARI, who run this contest.

As was the case in 2007, the top of the 24 hour Single Operator Fixed section was contested by Dave Edwards, G7 RAU, and the G0KPW station, this time operating as M6T and operated by Lada Bartosek, OK1ZH. M6T took first place for 2009.

There was just one entry in the Open section: G7HOA/A, Widnes and Runcorn ARC, operated by Mac, M0TXR.

The most popular section was 6 hour Single Operator Fixed. John Lemay, G4ZTR, regains first place this year after coming second last year. John has won this section six times in the last seven years. Stewart Cooper, GM4AFF, took second place.

In the 6 hour Open section the Windmill Contest Group, G0FBB, came first for the third year in a row. In fact they've won this section every year on record (since 1997), with the exception of 2006 where they came second. Second place this year went to Richard Newstead, G3CWI/P. Richard was one of three portable stations who braved the November weather this year.

Alan Horne, G0TPH, and David Rumbold, G4RYV, receive certificates for being highest placed stations running 25W or less to a single antenna in their respective sections.

Comments from the logs:
G0FBB
Average.
G0JJG
Lots of non-radio distractions again, managed to squeeze activity in around this! Challenged by a loud local sprog which seemed to follow me round the band.... Enjoyable as always, don't understand why this event is not more popular in the UK as it is in EU?
G0TPH
Rather flat conditions.
G3CWI/P
Conditions up and down. Very strong meteor pings on Sunday morning.
G3LET
Very much a casual entry having decided to see if a station could be assembled the previous day. CW on 2m seems to live on, mainly in continental Europe
G3UFY
Worked everyone I heard!
G4RQI
poor conditions in the north
G4RYV
Pretty poor,very noisey.
G4XPE
Poor conditions with long deep qsb made it very hard going. I work more in 2.5 hrs in the UKAC contests than I did in 4.75 hrs here!
G4ZTR
hard going !
G6CSY
Running to 5w to a 9 ele Tonna. Some signals very 'raspy'. Where were the ON stations?
G7RAU
12 hours of static rain made things hard going. condx were below normal, could not work some of the regulars. Still great fun, all contests should be cw :).
G8JXV
Conditions not good enough for me to reach all those DLs! It would be good to have a shorter (2-3 hour) CW contest some time, so that everyone is on the air together.
G8N
Just on for a couple hours on Saturday afternoon signals from Eu quite strong but with qsb.
GM4VVX/P
Arrived on site to -5c beautiful bright day.. Condx really bad. 12 pieces of equipment, 8 rf conections, 18 electrical conections, 6 hrs at -5c. Qso rate at 1.3 per litre of petrol in geni'.. and I though masachism was the xyl in stilletos & whip !
M1EYP/P
Raining and cold on Saturday, dry and bright on Sunday. Occasional DX to F, ON, PA but managed to work none of the many DLs. Good fun though.
M6T
Thanks all for QSOs. Thanks to Bob for letting me have a go and to Jiri
