144MHz Trophy 2009

After the challenging weather in 2008, the 2009 event saw much less extreme conditions. The weather was variable across the UK with some groups suffering from rain and low cloud while others commented on the mild and sunny conditions.

Conditions were above average with enhanced tropospheric conditions from east round to south west. In particular many stations made QSOs into northern Spain. In total twenty two countries appeared in the logs in one hundred and eleven locator squares. There were 47 QSOs above 1000 kMs and 4 greater than 1500 kMs. To illustrate the varying nature of conditions across the UK the best four contacts were two for GM4ZUK/P (IO86) into EA, G8T (JO01) into LY and G4HGI (IO83) into HA.

The numbers of entries for this event increased dramatically from 54 in 2008 to 78 this time. While the numbers in the 24 hour sections remained constant, the increases were in the six hour sections confirming the growing popularity of this format. A number of entrants commented on the poor level of activity from the UK.

Logging standards continue to improve with a number of leading stations losing less than 3% of their score. Some entrants will notice significant reductions to their claimed scores. Locators which do not coincide with the callsign prefix and the failure to log /P callsigns are the most common errors. All elements of the exchange are checked and some entrants continue to log the default 59 rather than the report actually received.

Few equipment failures were reported. One amplifier, one antenna and one rotator failed to survive the event! This year continued the trend in the reduction of poor signal comments.

Congratulations go to:

  • The Parallel Lines, G8P, who won the open section for the fourth year running to retain the Mitchell-Milling Trophy.
  • Bryn, G4DEZ, who won the single operator (fixed) section and is awarded the Thorogood Trophy.
  • Alan, GM4ZUK/P, for winning the single operator (others) section for the second year running.
  • The Reigate & Crawley Tigers, G5LK/P, who won the six-hour (others) section for the fourth year running in an exceptionally tight finish.
  • Stewart, GM4AFF, who won the six-hour single operator fixed section.

These stations together with those marked * will receive certificates.

Thanks for check logs from G3VQO, G4KZV, LZ9X, M0JBA/P, and RK3AF

Comments from the logs
2E0BMO
Low Activity.
2E0NEY
Very good condx this weekend. Some good DX and distances worked. Thanks to all for points
2W0VAG/P
Wet windy
G0BWC/P
Mild, cloudy, light winds
G0CLP/P
Hard going UK activity low only did 6 hrs pls can we have a so 6 hr section?
G0EHV/P
Good tropo into Western Europe. Low UK activity?
G0GWI
Excellent conditions towards Holland & Germany
G0JJG
Spare time operation again, good activity, EA tropo did not make it here.
G0LGS
Just giving away a few points, very little heard.
G0TPH
Great fun - some good DX available and plenty of activity.
G0UTT/P
Pleasant contest with good weather. Very strong signals in the SE from both Europe and GM.
G0VHF/P
Condx variable with some enhanced Tropo and (a little) SpE at our location.
G1KHX
Fairly good
G1ONE/P
Heavy rain whilst setting up, getting brighter and drier by contest start time. Mild but very windy
G3CKR
Giving pts away over slots in weekend schedule, not much activity Saturday but good to work EA late Saturday from this low qth on low power
G3RCM/P
A last minute arrangement to keep folks occupied while waiting their turn to operate in SSB FD ! Also a useful first contest for our new licencees.
G3YJR
Few UK squares worked but a nice opening to the continent. Heard EI as soon as the contest finished!
G3ZVW
Reasonable activity and conditions, so nice to work some DX.
G4DEZ
Just token entry missed start and watched TV for 5hours but some good DX.
G4FOH
Good conditions especially on Sunday. A very good-natured contest and thanks to all for the points. Only one bad signal noted (from a group that should have known better!)
G4GTH
Only operated Sunday morning. Good conditions to the East with occasional DX to the North
G4HGI
Good conditions
G4HSU
First entry in this contest = fingers crossed!
G4VPD
Good conditions shame my amp blown up and had to run barefoot. not even 100w!
G4XPE
Flat conditions with qsb.
G4XZL/P
Excellent propagation to Europe, managed finally to reach high power DL stations with fleapower! Also excellent tropo to EA, 59 reports received, with 59+ my end! EA1VHF also audible. Good fun and good weather!
G4ZAP/P
Condition up towards EA otherwise about average.
G5LK/P
Better conditions Sunday morning made up for the disappointment of yesterday.
G6CSY
Very pleased to work DL with the QRP.
G6KWA
Picked the wrong 6 hours the band was opening as I ended session hi hi. Enjoyed this first time from home in a 6 hour contest
G6NHU
Rotator failed costing me 40 minutes. It's not easy to work with a rotator one can only turn using a pair of screwdrivers stuffed in the control box as it was sparking and arcing when I turned the aerial.
G6UBM
Just popped up for a short period.
G7PVZ
Could only manage a small bit, family commitments.
G7SKR
A few hours operating
G8HGN
Some nice DX, but the usual poor signals again.
G8IB/P
Good tropo - first try - very enjoyable.
G8LZE
Actually chose the best 6 hours for once!
G8N
Some good DX but UK stations seemed thin on the ground.
G8P
Glad to have missed the very stormy weather on the Thursday before the contest, didn't want another year like last year! As it was the weather was very kind and even warm during set up on Saturday. Conditions just about normal if that on Saturday with a slight improvement on Sunday. Seemed like most of the longer distance QSOs were going over our heads into the West of the country making our ODX look quite poor! Overall a very enjoyable weekend. Operators G4CLA, G4IRX, G0HFX and thanks go to Dan LY3MM for travelling to operate with us this year.
G8T
Excellent weather conditions were a boon! One antenna faulty at start but repaired. Nothing else broke! Activity seemed lower than usual at start (perhaps football TV?) some good QSOs/QRBs worked including EA/OK/LY. First contest without John G6YIN who was in hospital.
GM4VVX
Worst tropo conditions ever experienced in contest. WX = Heavy cloud & rain. Could not get anything in 7 hrs on the Saturday! Sunday morning a few more qrv. 23 hrs before I get a qso outwith GM. BUT I WOZ THERE
GM4ZUK/P
Strange condx - nice opening to EA/HB9/DL. UK activity poor but condx OK. WX wet but much better than 2008!
GM6MD/P
Good conditions, with lots of DX worked. Weather on the wet and windy side, but great fun. Thanks to all who worked us.
GW8ASD
Nice to see some good tropo. Just on for a short while giving points away.
GW8ZRE/P
Main entry in Hilltopper Backpacker contest. Good EU DX on 10watts.
M0CES
12 ele in back garden attached to wheelie bin and 12 ft above the grass.
M0OXD
25 Watts from an old Icom IC-290D transceiver purchased the day before the contest for -L-10. JayBeam 2M FM antenna tilted horizontally outside top floor bedroom window @ 10 meters. Ancient Trio fist mic and no tuner.
M2F
Very disappointing condx in Norfolk compared to rest of country. Retired for a good supper during opening to SE!
M8C
Site not the best for vhf but this was a half effort .... could do better
M9T
Made a nice change to have enhanced tropo throughout the contest. Felt we were not in the best location to take advantage of the tropo but a nice average points per QSO. Several Europeans commented that we were their best DX - always good to hear.
MW0MAT/P
Good conditions.
