432MHz AFS 2009

Conditions were disappointing this year, with most entrants commenting on how bad things were! Entry level was up on last year, and there were 14 AFS teams competing, which is the highest number for many years.

A French contest runs concurrently with the early part of this contest, and this provided some good activity to the south.

Chesham and District Amateur Radio Society continue to dominate this event. Their A team were clear AFS winners again for the fourth year in a row, so they retain the G0ODQ trophy. Even their B team came third! Second place went to Spalding and District Amateur Radio Society.

The Single Operator Fixed section was won by Keith Tatnall G4ODA. Keith has won three times in the last four years. The runner-up was John Quarmby G3XDY.

The Open section was won by South Birmingham Radio Society G8OHM, with Bolton Wireless Club G1ONE/P in second place.

The following also receive certificates:

  • Raymond Ashworth 2E0RFX - leading intermediate licensee SF section
  • Chris Moore 2E0XLG/P - leading intermediate licensee Open section
  • Ken Punshon G4APJ - leading fixed station running 25W or less into a single antenna
  • Frank Laanen PE1EWR - leading overseas station

Comments from the logs
2E0XLG/P
Poor conditions
2E0RFX
Poor and s2 of constant pulsing noise,
2E0UOG
Frosty at first
G0BWC
Had to melt the antenna connector out of its ice-cube at start of event!
G0JJG
Late start - 910 would not produce RF until shack warmed up from -3 to +12C so used IC706 at first. Poor conditions.
G0KMV
Poor
G0VFW
Poor RF conditions, and less active stations around. Thanks for all who helped me to "Watch Paint dry!
G0XDI
Very poor conditions
G1AEG/A
Poor propagation - no distant stations heard, but good to hear so many locals on 70cm!
G1ONE/P
it was grim up north this morning thx for all who called
G3MEH
Flat conditions with deep QSB. Reasonable activity 1st 2 hrs, just 4 QSO's in last 1 1/2 hrs.
G3XDY
Very flat conditions, activity seemed limited too. Some good QSOs to France at the start were the redeeming feature.
G4APJ
Conditions very flat. Worked everything I heard except for a couple of seconds from F8BRG. Although not much activity that I could hear, it was at least activity!
G4GSB
5 qso's in 10 min's, then had to go QRT
G4ODA
Lots of very weak signals and much QSB. Only found and worked one GM There was some nice activity from France and some from Germany too. Thanks to all for the points
G6GVI/P
Clear and cold at first, but poor propagation. Lots of local FM activity.
G8LZE
Very deep QSB
G8OHM
Quiet at times, maybe activity reduced by the UKAC events.
G8ZRE
Better than expected on 20watts.
GW3ATZ
Dipped in and out over the morning. Flat conditions. More a try out of new entry system. Its BRILLIANT
GW8ASD
Poor conditions. No GI, GM and only one continental worked.
M0GHZ
Late on as I forgot! Generally poor conditions with little dx
M0GMG/P
Light snow towards the end - time to go home.
M1MHZ
Lots of QSB but NOT easy having NO ROTATOR controller!! Pleased with result with QRP & no rotator. Thanks to ALL for persevering. Hope to be on on Tuesday evenings & maybe even find the controller!! Had to run down drive & turn pneumatic tower [2sections extended] on trailer every time I changed beam heading. Quite amazed at what I was able to work QRP :)
M5BFL
Flat conditions, shame French contest finishes at 11am could have done with working a few more of them!
PE1EWR
Started this morning with French contest, hence first contact 004
