2010 2nd 144MHz Backpackers Contest

This session of the Backpackers contest runs alongside the Practical Wireless 2m Low Power Contest. Entrants enjoyed a high level of activity with some continental DX available to the better sited stations.

There was some confusion over the start time for this contest as this is the only session that does not start at 1100 UTC! It is worth remembering to check the start time (and rules!) before the contest at WWW.RSGBCC.ORG as this is the definitive source of RSGB contest information.

Congratulations to:

  • Winner: Hill Toppers (10H): Ken Coxon, G0HDV/P
  • Runner-up: Hill Toppers (10H): Steve Hurd, G0LMV/P
  • Winner: Backpackers (3B): Rhys Thomas, GW4RWR/P
  • Runner-up: Backpackers (3B): Dan Esdale, GW0RMX/P
  • Highest placed Intermediate Station: Chris Spencer, 2E0CBS/P
  • Highest placed Foundation Station: Jimmy Read, M3EYP/P

Thank you to G0LGS, G3UFY, G6NHU and G8ONK for providing very useful check logs.

Ian, G0FCT

Comments from the Logs:
2E0CBS/P
Good contest. Can't believe I worked Germany and France on 10W. Reasonably busy. Thanks. Same I didn't get the MM station right near the end.
G0BWC/P
overcast and rather cold. rain came in half an hour before end, so packed up early
G0FUW/P
DF station appeared right at the end - the one that got away! Good signals from north to south and west to east. Nothing heard from EI,GI, GM or channel isles.
G0LMV/P
Good at times with several pileups. New masthead preamp works well with the 736, far better than the deaf 897.
G0OIW/P
No great DX but plenty of stations to work.
G1ARU/P
Conditions seemed fairly flat with QSB but WX good apart from the odd shower.
G3BPK/P
Cloudy, light drizzle during last hour or so. 15-16 degrees c. For the middle of june!! Very little heard from europe. Unusual for this location and contest
G4ALE/P
Great Wx on the hilltop /p good fun. Getting the hang of 2m
G4FAA/P
bit of sp-e at first then pretty flat with qsb
G4VRC/P
WX sunny but windy. Conditions flat. No GMs worked from South Downs this time. Heard but could not work MI0AYR/P.
G4XZL/P
Flat conditions over UK, slight enhancement to France but no activity Great to see so many UK stations active
G7DDN/P
Missed the start; batteries went flat; beer spilt in laptop; One operator couldn't find the site; and we had a great time!
G7IVF/P
Conditions difficult at times but got plenty of contacts. Sorry to the G3 who tried to work me but got lost in QSB and massive QRM.
G7NBE/P
Just over 1 hour operating, due to other commitments, WX warm and sunny
G8BGV/P
Average conditions No GM contacts this outing.
G8HXE/P
Mix up over times resulted in only two hours of contest activity. WX "not good !" very wet.
G8IBL/P
Lovely sunny summer's day!
G8TMV/P
We had it all from sunshine to rain
GW3GUX/P
Severe local interference
GW4RWR/P
Yagi elements were crackling before contest start. Like standing under a pylon on a damp day. Scary!
GW8ZRE/P
Good start then terrible conditions could not for Jersey station , poor conditions to GM. Cold low temp 49F HIGH of 51F not a Summers day!!!
M0DCD/P
Rainy and overcast but enjoyed the day.
M0REG/P
Warm and sunny but rather breezy to start - will take more guys next time! Conditions were quite good but last hour was very slow.
M0TTE/P
Patchy sunshine
M5ABH/P
Nice to be back, lot of activity Bit DX and rain held off for me.
MM0VTV/P
Walking up to the summit in the mist and heavy rain made the hill scenery look very eerie! Glad to work IO80 from GM.
