First 70 MHz 2010

This year 123 stations were active during the event from G, GI, GM, GU, GW, LX and ON. This represents a large increase in activity. The numbers of entrants increased slightly, but a number of relatively high scoring stations did not enter. The appearance of the ON stations proved a highlight for a number of people. Although half of all the contacts took place in the first hour, activity levels remained high throughout with no one even managing to work half of the stations active.

Conditions were rated as poor to average and the usual deep 70MHz QSB caused a lot of people problems. This is reflected in the reductions to claimed scores. There were no Sporadic-E contacts but fourteen QSOs over 500 kMs were logged with the best complete QSO between GM4ZUK/P and G3TCU at 650 kMs.

Congratulations go to the section winners: The Colchester Contest Group, G0VHF/P, and Bryn, G4DEZ. Stations marked (*) will receive certificates.

Comments from the logs
2E0VPX
Poor, light rain
G0EHV/P
Typical 4 metres, QSB up and down.
G0HIK/P
Ist contest since last Sept RX seemed a bit deaf very windy so only 4 ele hope to do better next time
G0PQF/P
Poor Conditions but WX OK. Signals seemed weaker than normal, including beacons.
G0VHF/P
Useful test of new array. Interesting to experience the multiple changes of propogation conditions (direction, QSB) during the event.
G1ONE/P
First portable outing for new homebrew antenna and transverter
G2KF
Deep qsb at times Many thanks to all who turned their beams to cornwall
G3TCT
Good activity and good fun but poor condx
G3TCU/P
Good activity but average conditions
G4ADV/P
Band absolutely dead at first - no stations heard for the first half an hour. Then, QSB rather rapid - not long enough to get exchanges across. When we did manage to work some stations several said they heard us calling CQ earlier, but we could not hear them until later in the contest.
G4DEZ
Reasonable activity some relative DX
G4PDS
Very deep QSB
G4RFR
Lots of QSB good activity
G6UBM
still qsb problems
G8HGN
Heard much more than worked, but QSB and QRP don't mix. Nice to work 2 ON's
G8LZE
Sorry to the got aways. Slow last hour.
GM4DIJ
poor condx , deep qsb
GM4IGS
I could hear more station that I worked. QSB seemed to be bad at times and making my self heard was always a problem. Conditions seemed to be better towards the end of the contest. I missed half the contest due to other commitments. Generally good fun and look forward to the next contest.
GM4JR
DEEP QSB, a good few got away. Not helped by QRM from petrol lawnmower!
GM4ZUK/P
Condx poor - lots QSB as normal. Struggled to site after heavy snowfall a few days earlier.
GW8ASD
Poor conditions with deep QSB. A real struggle at times. Kept hearing ON5VW but never made contact. :-(
M0EMM
First time contest on 4m good all round conditions
M0GHZ
Reasonable condx but didn't hear any dx
MM0GPZ/P
First 4m test for me. I made 5 ele antenna yesterday and was pleased to see it worked nicely today. Thx go to G0KSC Justin for design.
