144MHz AFS 2010

This was the first contest in a series of four in the newly introduced AFS Super League. The series began in December 2010 with the 2m AFS, continues through January 2011 with the 80m CW and 80m SSB AFS contests and ends in February 2011 with the 70cms AFS. To do well overall a club needs to have a good spread of results in all four contests. Quite a challenge!

So, who made the best start to the series? Well, it's the Bristol Contest Group who have stolen the limelight, beating some of the more experienced VHF clubs to take top spot and the G3MEH trophy.

A number of clubs managed to have enough members active to make up 'A' and 'B' teams and Bolton WC even managed a 'C' team. One of these clubs is runner up, the Trowbridge & DARC. There were a total of 41 teams in this years contest, a new record for the event.

In the individual tables Bryn, G4DEZ did another fine job in beating all comers and once again takes top honours in the SF section. In second place, with an improved aerial system this year, Matt G0XDI is just ahead of last year's runner up Peter, G0VVE. Certificates also go to the highest placed entries in the following categories, G4APJ (single aerial/25w), Peter 2E0NEY (Intermediate Licensee) and M6JJK (Novice Licensee). Well done to all. With 103 entries in the SF section, this may also be a record.

In the Open section we find our usual band of hardy portable operators braving the December weather to try and achieve the best possible score for their clubs. With an impressive number of QSOs, Dave, M0GHZ/P moves up from 5th spot last year to head the table. In second place, trying to stay warm inside their portable van "Flossie", are the G3PYE team of Gavin, M1BXF and Colin, G8TMV pushing last year's winner, Matt, MW0MAT/P down into third place.

Congratulations to all this year's winners and good luck to all those who are taking part in any of the other AFS contests in the series.

Check logs are gratefully acknowledged from G8ONK GW8IZR M1EBV/M MW0BBU

Comments from the logs:
2E0BMO
Good Activity and conditions fair.
2E0NEY
Lots of activity but generally poor condx and little dx
2E0TXT/P
Started off a nice day till the icy fog rolled in
2E0ZMO
very noisy
G0BWC/A
Freezing fog, very icy Good pace of activity - hearing new stations well into the afternoon Operating from G6GVI QTH in central Bolton
G0DDX
Flat, some QSB High local noise level making reception difficult
G0DVJ/P
Deep QSB at times
G0EYO
conditions variable
G0HFX/P
Stuck in foot of snow--missed 1st hour--lost another 1/2 hour when genny ran out of fuel--Lost PC log due to PC failure--got v cold but still pleased with effort.
G0ICJ
low level of activity only able to spend limited time on contest
G0KYS
Good activity
G0MLY
Just a few minutes playing on a Sunday afternoon!
G0TAR
Good for VHF. partial lift
G0VFW
Somewhat flat, Plenty of stations at beginning but generally slow near the end
G0VJG/P
Hard going heavy qsb at times
G0VVE
Flat with qsb. Relatively low activity
G0XDI
Conditions Awful but activity good :
G1OGY
Not the optimum setup to review propagation.
G3BNE
PRETTY FAIR
G3KIP
High QRN
G3TKF/P
At least the sun was out all day... my first ever 2m /p contest with my own call !
G3TTC
Deep QSB. Signals would come several S points out of the noise for 15 secs. then drop, never to be heard again.
G3TXF
Used a slim-Jim type vertical antenna on the chimney. Probably not the ideal antenna for this type of contest. Can't get over these VHFers trying to exchange "real" RST reports in contests! Fading on VHF can be massive. So what is the purpose of these supposed "real" reports? Stick with 59(9) Chaps!. You've already got the Serial Number and the Grid Square which are the core of the exchange.
G3VYI
First time in AFS with good ant condx not great! Only 1 F worked in EU
G3XBY/P
Lots of QSB, no one pointing at Devon! Very little EU DX heard or worked. Thanks to Tim G4FJK who organised an Exmoor site for me, unfortunately weather forced me elsewhere!
G3YOA
Only the last 45 mins
G3ZII
freezing!
G3ZVW
What a slog! This contest could do with being a bit shorter.
G4APJ
Better than expected from the weather, but not brilliant.
G4ASR
Conditions poor. Slow going after 2pm. 191 QSOs - only 1 on CW - pathetic! Need more VHF CW operators!
G4BAO
Flat
G4DEZ
Activity poor and little DX although managed 12 dxcc :
G4FKA
Casual entry to give away a few points
G4GTH
Average - Not much DX
G4JQN
Fair
G4ODA
poor conditions. other duties prevented full time operation.
G4WAC
Conditions flat as a pancake! But lots of fun from the club station with lots of operators new to contesting taking part.
G4XPE
Poor propagation from NW to NE and deep qsb from SW to SE.
G6BRA
Seemed reasonable Thanks for the points
G6KWA
Very late start due to work, had to stop due to 2 unexpected TVI complaints.
G6NHU
Conditions very poor, no real DX and activity low compared to my previous experience of this contest.
G6ZXN/A
QSB deep at times
G7IVF
Conditions got poorer as time went on
G7LFC
Beam fixed SE, no rota
G8CUL
Good activity.
G8HGN
Hard slog no condx and very few EU apart from the F's at start.
G8ZRE
Hard going but enjoyable contest.
GD8EXI
Typical winter conditions but very quite after lunch
GM0ELP
IC7000 9 ele yagi @ 7m A struggle to get noticed. Very slow going hardly any CW. Hardly any GM's on.....no wonder! Not enjoyable this far north. Thanks to all who worked me.
GM4JR
HARD going & VERY cold. Average temp minus 3. Plenty of activity, not a lot of GM and no GI heard. Lots of people who don't listen though. Lost count of how many times I told some stations "only locator" or "only signal" etc to have them repeat the lot again - and the bit I needed fell into the noise AGAIN and AGAIN only to lose them completely in QSB!! Good fun though. Nice average Kms.
GM8IEM
Flat conditions. Now QRV again on 2m after a 2 year break.
GW8ASD
Just giving away a few points through the day.
GW8IZR
Checklog entry, a few hours S&P during the day, good UK activity for those willing to look for it. :
M0AKT
Only operated for the last 2 hours with the antenna fixed SW.
M0CNP
Mast frozen in lowered position so not so good
M0GHZ/P
Good activity, some QSB, good fun despite cold feet!
M0HZT
thanks to all... very enjoyable contest.. look forward to working you all again
M0MCV
Good first 5 hours but difficult condx for the last 3
M0VFC
Wonderful! 10dB improvement on last year's QSO count! Points to Camb-Hams.
M0XDX
Poor conditions, seemed better towards the South-West from the Lincolnshire coast.
M0ZZO
Very difficult as one of my Yagi's was pointing the wrong way
M1EBV/
M Just a fun dabble from the car on the downs in Bristol
M1NTO
Very foggy
M3YJW/P
Cold and Icey Ground
MW0MAT/P
A glorious crisp day, a little slippery in the snow but worth making the trip out. Band conditions were average but some reasonable DX.
