432MHz AFS 2010

This year saw a big step up in participation, with sixty-three entries (last year there were thirty-five). A total of twenty-six affiliated society teams appear in the results - twelve more than last year.

Bolton Wireless Club managed to get eleven of their members on air, which resulted in the first `D' team on record!

Conditions were generally described as flat or poor, but activity was noted as good compared to previous years.

Congratulations to Chesham & District Amateur Radio Society, who win for the fifth consecutive year. They retain the G0ODQ trophy. Spalding & District Amateur Radio Society came second, as they did in 2009, but managed to narrow the gap with the leaders this year.

Congratulations to Keith Tatnall G4ODA for winning the Single Operator Fixed section for the third year running. Pete Lindsay G4CLA was in second place.

There was a close battle at the top of the Open section, with Dave Gilligan G1OGY/P coming out just ahead after adjudication with an error-free log. David and Pete Millard, operating as M0GHZ, were a very close second.

The following also receive certificates:

  • Mick Toms M6XBF - leading foundation licensee SF Section
  • Bob Treacher 2E0RCV - leading intermediate licensee SF Section
  • Jonathon 2E0CNJ/P - leading intermediate licensee Open Section
  • Richard Staples G4HGI - leading fixed station running 25W or less to a single antenna

Checklogs gratefully received from G3VCQ, G8AQO/P, G8ONK, and PE1EWR.

Bob Edgar G0KYS

Comments from the logs
2E0RCV
Useful start but where was all the activity in the last two hours?
G0EUN
Very Good, shame about the stations involved. Poor turn out?
G0HFX/P
TKS FER QSOS de Chris TDARC
G0JJG
Only able to operate 9:30 to 11:00 - heard and lost GM4JR and DR3M.
G0LGS
Only on for first 35 minutes
G0RAF
Very flat Conditions.
G0VJG/P
Hard going very slow last 2hours
G0XDI
Great fun with good activity from DL and PA Conditions up slighty with deep QSB at times
G1HLT
Excellent signals from GM4JR and G1OGY/P. Conditions otherwise poor, Glad I didnt go with 25w which was the original plan.
G1MZD
Very deep QSB, lack of pwr, poor antenna made it difficult, but still enjoyable
G1SWH
lots of qsb
G1WKS
Deep QSB tnx for pnts
G3BNE
Not too bad at first but very poor for last 2 hrs with erratic/deep QSB and a dearth of new stations
G3MDG/P
Beam stuck east because of serious cable fault. Conditions average.
G3VCQ
Vy poor from North Derbyshire but down south seem to be okay working into Europe no problem as were the big guns all over.
G3YJR
Sorry, I only got on right at the end!
G4CLA
Reasonable conditions and great to hear to many stations QRV on a Sunday !
G4DEZ
Late start (bed too warm) and about 1 hour operating
G4HGI
Poor setup at this end must do better ! Some nice strong signal but condx from io83 not great
G4JQN
Average + deep qsb
G4KIY
Generally poor cnditions. No German or Dutch stations heard or worked apart from Frank PE1EWR. Lost around 30 mins when rotator fault occurred. Stripped controller and replaced lever switch.
G4ODA
Nothing special but fair activity improved from previous years. Slow QSB on some sigs but not the rapid flutter common on 70
G6GVI
Mild and drizzly
G7DDN
Good fun and heard more than I worked, even with a "wrong" antenna!
G8HGN
Enough activity to make the full 4 hrs. Some DX from europe.
G8OHM
Conditions average, at least activity better than last year.
G8ZRE
Fair for 20watts.
GD8EXI
Typical Winter conditions
GM4JR
Below average, lots more heard than worked.....when I win the lottery I'm going to hand out free rotators!
GW8ASD
Strange conditions. Lots of QSB, mutipath etc. Heard nothing of the German or Dutch stations.
M0GHZ
Good activity, condx fairly flat but still made a few good dx contacts
M1MHZ
Definitely very hard going with low power & no KST. 70Cms is a band where 400w or KST is essential for sanity. Hours wasted listening to white noise-if it wasn't for the club effort it would be a no-no band for me without lift or KST or 400w. Jobs around the garden beckon.
M3ZPJ
poor
M6XBF
weird some sigs going from S9 to zero but not necessarily back again
