70 MHz CW 2010

The 70MHz CW contest was reinstated this year by popular demand after a gap of four years. In the intervening period there has been an explosion of activity on the band and many more countries now have access. In 2005 when the contest was last run, there were eight entrants with the leader making nineteen QSOs. This year there were seventeen entries with the leader making twenty six QSOs. In total there were thirty four stations active in DL, G, GM, GW and ON. S5 was heard briefly but no complete contacts took place.

Activity levels were moderate and over half the total contacts were made in the first hour. However, there were extra stations and multipliers available throughout and capturing these had significant impact on the final placings. Conditions were flat with the usual four metre QSB. Only six contacts over 400kMs were completed, with a lack of activity in the extremes of the UK.

This band provides a challenge to provide the equipment for a competitive station and there was a vast array homebrew and commercial transverters and amplifiers and a variety of antenna types.

Logging standards were variable from perfect logs to stations who will note that they lost over 30% of their claimed scores. Interestingly the biggest source of error was copying the incoming RST.

Congratulations go to the section winners: The Flight Refueling ARS, G4RFR, and John, G4ZTR. Stations marked (*) will receive certificates.

Comments from the logs:
G0VOF
Only active very briefly with extremely rusty CW. More practice needed.
G3JYP
Patchy Condx. Where were the GMs? Only worked 1, and that was a struggle! Enjoyed it all the same!
G3LVP
Conditions average, No GM's GI's etc. Much low level QRM every 10kHz or so across the band making copy of weak signals difficult
G3RDQ
Some serial nos sent out of sequence by mistake.
G3TCT
Not much activity, condx average, no dx heard
G3UKV
Good to hr CW on 4m again but no GMs heard or worked. Heard tantalising S9 from S5 station in last 2 mins ! But no QSO resulted. 2.5 hrs would be long enough - an evening perhaps ?
G3WKZ
Cold and wet start, flat band conditions
G4BRK
G4RFR
gave me the postcode B5, when queried they insisted it was B5 so I logged it as such though it doesn't look right.
G4IRX
Average condx, deep QSB. Spent yesterday re-building the transverter, nice to get an opportunity to test it.
G4RFR
QSB with fairly low level of activity
G4RGK
Flat
G4TSH
Built station in time for last half hour of contest!
GW8IZR
Usual deep QSB and little tropo. Heard and called S51DI who was 519 for a while and got a QRZ back but no QSO.
M0AFJ
Poor Conditions, low activity not a highlight!
