144MHz Low Power 2010

The contest this year saw 48 entries, this is two up on 2009 & once again the highest ever entry level. Conditions were reported to be fairly flat until a sporadic E opening to Spain, Portugal & Morocco surprised 15 entrants which gave contacts over 2,000km. A1 CG managed the best DX in the contest at 2190km to CN8NK in IM63. This is not at all bad for a maximum power of 25W in what was generally described as an enjoyable contest. Logging standards were quite high with 13 perfect logs having no errors & 14 logs with one error. The most common error (30%) was logging incorrect RS(T) followed by the logging of incorrect callsign (23% of all errors). One example of the logging of incorrect call was one station claiming to have worked a G9+3 call which is obviously wrong as G9+3 calls are not licensed for amateur use!

The top spot in the Open section was very close run with Colchester CG just ahead of A1 CG & both stations retain their 2009 positions. Erik, G8XVJ/P had a very respectable Single Operator Open section score which would put him ahead of all bar one of the Open section entries with Tim, G4ARI/P as runner-up. Rob, G8HGN & Bryn, G4DEZ retain their leading 2009 positions in the Single Operator Fixed section.

Congratulations go to the following

  • Winner - Open section - Colchester CG of Colchester RA (G0VHF/P)
  • Runner-up - Open section - A1 Contest Group (G4ZAP/P)
  • Winner - Single Operator Fixed section - Rob Harrison (G8HGN)
  • Runner-up - Single Operator Fixed section - Bryn Llewellyn (G4DEZ)
  • Winner - Single Operator Others section - Erik Gedvilas (G8XVJ/P)
  • Runner-up - Single Operator Others section - Tim Raven (G4ARI/P)
  • 2E0NEY, PE1EWR, 2E0TXT/P & F/G4HHJ/P will also receive certificates.

Checklogs gratefully received from GW3NYY/P & 2M0ZRN/P

Many thanks to all who submitted logs.

Comments from the logs:
2E0NEY
Difficult condx, but good when it opened to CT and CN! F/G4HHJ/P 2hr holiday operation during family vacation to Brittany. Better propagation across the Bay of Biscay to Spain than across the English Channel to England. Shame to only make one G contact, but heard 2E0NEY making QSO and G4DEZ right down in the noise on .260.
G0CER
Hard going and very noisy QRN between 1500-1700.
G0GJV
Just giving points away
G0UTT/P
Got heavily rained on and not much tropo but otherwise a pleasant afternoon. Dengie Hundred ARS.
G0VFW
Some strong signals from F & DL.
G0VHF/P
Little European activity which puts us at a disadvantage but an improvement on last year's score on what amounts to Flat Band is pleasing.
G0VOK
Hard going in search and pounce mode but great fun.
G1ONE/P
showery and cool even with the big aerial, signals were below par
G3BNE
heavy qsb on most
G3MDG/P
Poor conditions but sporadic E added to the interest. Only CT worked by Es but EA and CN8 also heard.
G3SPJ
Whole contest blighted by strong broadband noise to the North
G3VYI
Worked all I could hear ! Must move beacon hill !
G3WIR/P
Very flat conditions except for some sporatic E weather quite good but few stations on
G4ARI/P
Nice to catch some Sporadic E
G4DEZ
Conditions terrible activity low. Nice to Get GU as last QSO in contest!
G4FZN/P
Poor tropo. No Es. Static charged rain. Freezing temp. -- In August!!!!
G4OCO/P
Enjoyed the E's and thanks to all who worked us.
G4ZAP/P
Very enjoyable as usual. Pity changes are planned next year.
G6CSY
Deep QSB even on very local contacts. No CW stations heard. Glad to give away a few points
G6NHU
It was hard work, even when the Es came
G8HGN
Some DX on a flat band, apart from the ES, nothing special. No GM/GD/GI/EI or IO90/80.
G8KQW
awful tropo however some excellent sporadic-E halfway through
G8LZE
Full session not possible
G8XVJ/P
VERY WET ONLY THREE HOURS TO SETUP LOTS GOING ON ES WAS GOOD TO HAVE SUN CAME OUT GOT DRY
G8ZRE
Token entry work commitments.
GD8EXI/
MM I was surprised what I could work with a halo in Port St Mary harbour.
GW3NYY/P
Pretty flat, although a couple of GMs were worked. Only one continental station heard, a weak French station. People rarely beam to the West!
GW4RWR/P
Abysmal. -ANG and -VHF as weak as they ever get. Local wideband hash from BT facility so could only use two directions. Sad day out despite my expectations.
M0MCV
Only heard 1 x CT here but at this time of year 1 is gratefully worked! Pity about the last few hours.
M0MPM
Heard CT1HZE and CN8NK with strong sigs.
M0TTE/P
In cloud on Fountains Fell and very wet.
M1MHZ
Quite a poor score. Never seem to do too well on LP contests. Missed out on the Es seemed to generally to be to the South of 92#. Listened on FM & heard a few bits but all worked on SSB. A poor turnout compared to a UKAC - not sure what the answer is for this contest.
