1st 144 MHz Backpackers Contest of 2011

The first 144 MHz Backpackers contest of 2011 attracted an entry of 27 stations. Two stations (MW6OXO/P and M0TAZ/P) also submitted a check log, thank you. The weather was not kind to the Backpackers with high winds and intermittent torrential rain although some entrants reported they managed to stay dry - they were the lucky ones!

Band conditions were also not good with little in the way of DX available even to the better sited stations.

Congratulations to:

  • Winner: Hill Toppers (10H): G1ARU/P
  • Runner-up: Hill Toppers (10H): G4AAX/P
  • Winner: Backpackers (3B): GW4RWR/P
  • Runner-up: Backpackers (3B): G4ARI/P
  • Leading Intermediate Station (3B): 2E0TXT/P

Entrants to section 3B are reminded that operation from vehicles is not permitted (rule 2.1 f) and the equipment must be carried and operated at least 100 metres from the transportation vehicle (rule 2.1 h).

Comments from the Logs:
2E0BFJ/P
Very very windy but we did keep dry.
G0TKZ/P
Rather Windy with showers - not as many stations around as this time last year, nor the good condx
G1ARU/P
Very windy but mast stayed up, hardly any rain in North Norfolk. Poor conditions and activity.
G3BPK/P
Very blustery, some rain, not a single european station heard most unusual for this site. Kept going till the end of the contest but the last hour, when the 24 hour contest finished was very quiet!!
G4AAX/P
Weather conditions poor. Heavy rain at times with strong winds throughout
G4ALE/P
Very very windy! Had to move off ridge. Condx seemed ok activity good till last hour. Had to hold beam with boots against the wind!
G4ARI/P
Gale force winds. some rain and no DX. But it was fun
G4MKR/P
Wx very difficult. Strong winds and rain showers. Had great trouble keeping tent from flying away. Broke headphones early on and had trouble hearing stations over the wind noise. Forgot to pack sandwiches. Cut hand on antenna. Great fun! Must do it again.
G4XZL/P
Flat conditions. Very high winds, struggled to keep beam pointing any direction except NE!
G7IVF/P
Windy!
G7NBE/P
Very windy, connector between batteries and transceiver failed after 80 minutes.
G8HXE/P
Windy !
GW0RMX/P
Very high noise level. Extremely strong winds.
GW3NYY/P
Flat condx. Howling gale and torrential rain at times, making it impossible to keep antenna pointing in any one direction. Abandoned the attempt after 80 minutes and went home!
GW4RWR/P
Wet for the ascent, then seriously windy on top, blown off my feet once. 3x 5 mins static rain. Beacons very weak, and low activity.
GW8ZRE/P
EXTREME GALES MAST ONLY 3M HIGH. TEMP 49F BRURR! No GI/GM/EI or EU DX,ONLY FOOLS & HORSES GO OUT IN THIS WX. Only one new QSO in last 90mins!
M0CES/P
Windy and wet and sunny and windy .
M0GMG/P

M0JMM/P
Windy!!!!
M0REG/P

M0TAZ/P
