3rd 144 MHz Backpackers contest of 2011

Twenty-four stations entered this contest that, as usual, was run alongside the final few hours of VHF NFD. Activity was high with lots of DX available. The high power VHF NFD stations did cause some problems for a few entrants but the last hour (after VHF NFD had ended) was reported to be very quiet. The comments from the entrants (below) sum the weather up nicely - warm and sunny, a nice change from previous Backpacker sessions!

Congratulations to:

  • Winner: Hill Toppers (10H): Dave Hewitt, GW8ZRE/P
  • Runner-up: Hill Toppers (10H): Tony Judge, G1ARU/P
  • Leading Intermediate Station (10H): Tristan Quiney, 2E0VXX/P
  • Winner: Backpackers (3B): Rhys Thomas, GW4RWR/P
  • Runner-up: Backpackers (3B): Andrew Vare, G4XZL/P
  • Leading Intermediate Station (3B): Paul Swingewood, 2E0CVU/P

Check logs are gratefully acknowledged from MU3ZLQ and all of the entrants on 2m in VHF NFD.

Ian, G0FCT

Comments from the Logs:
2E0CVU/P
Superb Day. Sunburt, sunstroke and dehydration. Loved it all.
2E0VXX/P
GM slipped away, nice afternoon in the sun
G0OVA/P
Variable good at times to gm and gi some dl. Generally clean signals
G1ARU/P
Great WX and conditions seemed slightly up.
G3BPK/P
Very warm for a change! Not much heard from Europe, but worked into IO62 for the first time, thanks EI9E/P for the contact. Looking forward to the next Hilltoppers. Its a Saturday---wonder how many will be available to take part??
G3NYY/P
Tropo conditions slightly enhanced. Very deep QSB on GM signals. Activity extremely low in last hour after NFD had ended.
G4ARI/P
Glorious weather didn't pack tent or waterproof. Main problem was flies
G4VRC/P
WX hot and calm. Strong sigs from GM to the South Downs. A good spread of contacts across the UK. Nice to work a DF. A good day, thanks everyone.
G4XZL/P
Conditions up, excellent propagation to GM, wx great! Note, some stations were reporting OK1CZ/P without the F/ prefix!!!
G8HXE/P
Had to try a new site this time as visiting relations - with this result I wish I hadn't bothered!
G8PNN/P
Wx excellent, warm and sunny. Hard work with 10w trying to get attention of vhf field day high power stations from up here in the north, England's border county.
GM4GUF/P
Average
GW0RMX/P
Hot and sunny and europe. What a change from previous sessions!
GW3ATZ/P
Good conditions, WX great. Part of band unuseable with 290 due to big NFD stn not far away. Better after NFD. Enjoyable day out.
GW4RWR/P
Splendid wx. Saw an eagle on arrival. Signals just a bit stronger than usual. Only hassle were the midges as the breeze dropped as I packed up.
GW8ZRE/P
Superb WX & Contacts a real surprise OK1CZ/P after main contest had finished in IN99 QRA Square
M5ABH/P
Lovely WX for a change. Lots of activity and quite good condx
