144MHz Trophy 2011

After two relatively calm years, the weather returned to the Trophy weekend this year. A weather front crossed the country bringing torrential rain and gales to many entrants. Tents and masts were challenged and a number of entrants were soaked after the event while packing the equipment away. Static rain plagued a number of people and nearby thunderstorms caused some to retire to a safe distance.

Conditions were generally above average with European stations from OZ, through OE/OK round to southern F and EA being worked. Many thought that conditions peaked on the Saturday, but analysis shows most of the paths were open throughout the event. In total seventeen countries appeared in the logs in one hundred and fifteen locator squares. One entrant managed to work 93 squares. There were only two QSOs above 1000 km with a further thirty one QSOs between 900 and 1000 km. The best contacts were by G8P (JO01) into OE at 1046 km and G4Z (JO02) into northern Spain at 1034 km. QSO totals were down on those in 2010.

The numbers of entrants fell noticeably this year, almost entirely in the six hour sections which have been well supported recently. Most entrants commented on the poor level of activity from the UK.

Logging standards continue to improve with many entrants now losing less than 5% of their scores and many leading stations considerably less. All elements of the exchange are checked during the adjudication. Locators which do not coincide with the callsign prefix and the failure to log /P callsigns remain the most common errors.

Few equipment problems, other than those which were weather related, were reported.

Congratulations go to:

  • The Parallel Lines, G8P, who won the open section for the sixth year running to retain the Mitchell-Milling Trophy.
  • Bryn, G4DEZ, for winning the single operator (fixed) section for the third year running and as the highest scoring single operator is awarded the Thorogood Trophy.
  • Allan, GM4ZUK/P, who won the single operator (others) section.
  • Eddie, G0EHV/P, who won the six-hour (others) section.
  • Richard, GD8EXI, who won the six-hour single operator fixed section for the second year running.

These stations together with those marked * will receive certificates.

Thanks for check logs from F1VNR, G1SHM, G3MEM, G3WKZ, G8ZRE, GW6BK/P, GW8IZR, M0B and TM6M.

Comments from the logs
2E0BMO
Condx patchy, some DX Sat. PM and Early Sunday. UK activity seemed down on last year.
2E0NEY
Superb condx both days - nice to work gd dx in a contest!
2E0VXX/P
Good condition into Europe, not many UK stations! Just gave a few points away
G0CDA
On QRV Saturday on and off but no UK activity up here. There needs to a major re think of the Trophy element of the contest to attract inter UK activity as it is a jo01/jo02 battle. Would work more G's on Tuesday night.
G0EHV/P
Band fairly average but contest enlivened by continental activity. Poor UK support but fair activity from backpackers.
G0KDV/P
Need to get a rotator to save going out in the rain to turn the beam.
G0KSC/P
Hour or two point giving not many G
G0LGS
Just a token entry, but some nice DX (even from behind the Cotswolds).
G1ARU/P
Good condx to South East. WX OK until an hour before end of contest, then torrential rain.
G1MZD
Very little activity in UK especially to the north, good tropo to EU. tnx for points
G3BPK/P
Good weather with rising barometric pressure. European stations coming in by 11.30am at our location. Gone by 14.00 but good to work a few!! Very pleasant day on the hill!
G3NYY/P
Fair tropo conditions to Europe, especially Northern France. Very low UK activity. Only active for last three hours of the contest.
G3RCM/P
Poor choice of site very noisy
G3WKZ
Mild / cloudy
G3XBY/P
Below average to South, flat elsewhere. Some good contacts made to GM on Sunday. Rain on Saturday and again on Sunday at 1400. Absolutely sodden!
G4ALE/P
New /p QTH better for EU !! Flat condx to north. Thanks to all for contacts
G4DEZ
Low UK activity
G4HGI
Condx on Saturday eve much better than Sunday
G4HHJ
Limited operation. Good fun though.
G4RYV
Conditions Flat with deep qsb at times. Disappointing Level of UK Activity.
G4VPD
New LFA antenna hearing more than old ant with no band noise but little activity heard.
G4XPE
Good conditions except NW through W to SW where nothing much was heard for long periods.
G4XZL/P
Wx good at start, terrible at end. Had to closedown early due to torrential rain and gale force wind! Felt like the shelter was going to buckle at any moment! Antenna chose its own direction! Band conditions reasonable, got good reports into GM and eastern France and Germany
G4Z
Very average.
G5B
Average Condx. Found band to be very noisy in Eu [QRM]. Poor support in UK for this contest with approx 200 stns in 24hrs worked. Rain 30mins before end with torrential down-pour for lowering antennas and tidying away.
G5RS/P
Flat. Weather: dry when we needed it to be.
G6CSY
Glad to give away a few points during the Russian Radio WW RTTY contest! No CW heard.
G7SAC/P
Co-sited with SSB Field Day station - not a good VHF site.
G8APB
Conditions Good, but little UK activity.
G8CUL
Nice conditions in Europe on Saturday evening.
G8DOH
Good conditions E to SE. Several DX got-aways due to stronger nearer stations in DL.
G8HGN
Virtually all S&P. Good for 1st 5+ hrs then condx were going down.
G8IB/P
Afternoon session hard going but evening was good fun (even with rotator failure!)
G8N
Wet start but a dry finish!
G8NWC/P
Terrible, rain, oh and some more rain, good fun between the downpour.
G8ONK
Conditions flat
G8P
Conditions seemed well above normal, especially on Saturday. Some good DX worked but our score is down from last year. A number of problems, including thunderstorms, mains failures and heavy static rain.
G8T
Got off to a good start but after around four hours weather front went through and 2m appeared to "close" to the east with only stations from JO20/21/30/31 audible. Weather front was followed by thunder storm and static rain for about two hours - 59 noise gave rise to slow QSO rate. Conditions seemed flat/average throughout the rest of the event with slight tropo towards southern France and Spain. Activity seemed poor and QSO rate slower than expected - especially over night - which was hampered by us not having a working voice keyer. New equipment (pre-amplifiers and solid-state PA) worked well. We got the station built in record time but the operating tent (and station) nearly blew away about 45 min before the start due to a high gust of wind. Other than breeze/gusts of wind the weather held out pretty well.
G8ZRE
Could not make it for B/P so gave away points especially to stns in last hour, the grave yard shift!!!.
GD0TFG/P
Increasing cloud cover and S S/W wind. Quite pleasant at picnic table behind windbreak, but batteries drooped at the end of the day as the solar panel provided little power. Sorry about Tx signal, power supply fault!
GD8EXI
Some very strong signals from N France but otherwise flat band with many German stations heard briefly but unworkable in practice.
GM4JR
Quite hard going trying to get people to turn north! Conditions were generally quite good with ON, PA, F stations audible pretty well all the time. Apologies to M3WDS - he's a tryer a real trooper. Never completed yet, but he tried VERY hard!
GM4VVX/P
WX perfect - RF abysmal ! 2hr 42min before the 1st answer to my CQ. Thanks to all who made the attempt to beam into GM.
GM4ZUK/P
UK activity very poor. Condx not good to SE. Really hard work this year. Equipment all worked faultlessly.
GW0IRW/P
Driving rain & cold Sat, better Sunday but flat conditions
GW4RWR
Plenty of F stations around. Not such a lot of UK activity.
GW8ASD
A lack of UK stations, particularly locals, which, at least, allowed me a chance to work some of the Continentals. :-)
GW8IZR
Poor condx - no tropo 800Km ODX = flat band
GW8OVZ/P
Cold & wet, very wet on the way back. Pole broke in the wind.
M0B
Nice to work OZ and OK. 1 ping of S5 heard but not worked. Decent level of activity around Europe including the UK despite rumblings on the UK reflector. GM4ZUK/P was strong throughout. Station in neighboring square made life interesting across swathes of the band, and surely this was reciprocal. All in all, great fun. 23 hours operated.
M0DDC/P
Worked little to the North from JO01, Europe and West were best directions .. and then the rain came! Thanks for all contacts.
M0REG/P
Wet and windy again, this time with S7 rain static! Can some decent summer weather be arranged for next year please?
M1EYP/P
Beautiful summers afternoon. DX into PA, ON and F. DL heard but not worked. Nothing from GD or EI.
M5ABH/P
Was bit late starting, getting tent up etc. Rain dried off though, afternoon lovely. Had nice time and condx good to F ON PA.
MM1APS/P
Warm, light cumulus, steady breeze. Lots of Europeans (F, ON, DF, DL, T9) heard but not worked despite many attempts, ditto lots of English stations! Unfortunately the band went almost silent at 1400Z on the dot!
MW6OXO/P
Wild night heavens opens and a couple of high gusts one seen off my rotator, got drowned rotating antenna by hand Grrrrr. Thanks for the points 73s TM6M Lots of wind during contest. Some good activity to UK. Pity no more GM except GM4ZUK/P and GM0PJT/P. Thanks all for qsos. F6KHM crew References Visible links 1. mailto:G4BVY@vhfcc.org?subject=144MHz%20Trophy%202007
