2nd 70MHz Contest 2011

A very good entry level although just a little lower than last year. There were several reports of very strong winds, which may have deterred some stations from going out portable. 57% of entrants had error free logs which is quite an improvement on than last year. Some very welcome continental activity on the band which required split frequency working on 69.950MHz.

Congratulations go to certificate winners as below:

  • Winner Open - Allan Duncan GM4ZUK/P
  • Runner-Up Open - Chris Kirby G4FZN/P
  • Winner Single Operator Fixed - David Butler G4ASR
  • Runner-Up Single Operator Fixed - John Lemay G4ZTR
  • Leading Fixed Station Running 25W Or Less To a Single Antenna - David Dix G8LZE
  • Leading Single Operator Fixed Section Intermediate Licensee - Paul Johnson 2E0TXT
  • Leading Overseas Station - Marc Opdecam ON5VW

Comments from the logs:
G0EHV/P
Poor conditions and lots of wind! Activity also low and a few regulars not about.
G3NPI
Started poor then after an hour improved
G3TCT
Fair condx at first, then mediocre. Activity down. Hrd GM4JR, GM4IGS
G3TCU/P
Condx not bad considering the disturbed Wx but activity disappointing
G4ASR
What a slog! Worse than the evening UKAC.
G4FJK/P
Strong wind but wx stayed dry. Good sigs from 2x ONs, plus 5x GMs & 1x GI, but missing many high-pointers from JO01+02. 4x CW QSOs
G4FZN/P
Poor band conditions. Very Very windy. The 5 ele beam now has S-shaped elements due to a slight mishap (!) during take-down. The tail end of hurricane Katia expected later today - glad it was a morning contest.
G4RFR
Conditions up and down, some good DX at times.
G4SJH
Fairly flat but did hear GM4ZUK/P several times and called but with no luck!
G8CUL
Lots of QSB and wind!
G8LZE
Couldn't quite make it with ZUK/P
G8MCA
First time I have been in UK for a 4m contest since completing the transverter. Simple setup as no more room on the mast!!!
G8ONK
Too windy to erect mast, worked the one station I could hear from ground level
GM4DIJ
very high noise level. Heard ON, G4FJK/P was a struggle in QSB
GM4JR
REALLY hard going today. Lots of regulars amiss - weather? WX horrible, high winds, static rain. Could reduce this contest to 2 hours, 3hrs FAR too long. All good fun though - thanks for the points.
GM4VVX
Rain & low cloud, but not the high winds forecast. Usual long rolling QSB. Not many signals heard here in the far North.
GM4ZUK/P
Condx flat. G4ASR and G4RFR much weaker than normal. WX very windy and heavy showers. Heard ON stations but no idea of their RX freq.
GW4RWR
Weak & watery signals. Very unsettled wx. 2hrs' play before wife forced child care duty on me.
GW8ASD
Variable conditions. A couple more ONs heard but not worked. Good GM activity.
GW8IZR
Poor conditions here and antenna at lowest height due to wind - last minute tropo to ON but otherwise hard going.
M0COP/P
Wet and windy, low mast. Deep QSB
M1MHZ
Missed the first part of the contest watching the Wales / S.Africa rugby match so just giving points away. Band seemed very quiet but some v.good signals when found, I guess that after the first hour it was S & P for most of the contesters so with everyone listening there wasn't too much heard. Nice to see the ON stations following / supporting the RSGB contests.
