70 MHz Trophy 2011

Despite this event taking place in the middle of summer, the elements provided a stern test to the portable entrants. Torrential rain and gale force winds caused problems. Additionally thunder and lightening caused problems for some and static rain was an additional challenge.

This is the second year that the Trophy has run in July. Compared to 2010, the numbers of entries rose by 50% and the number of stations appearing in the logs increased by 40%. Overall just over 200 stations in 9 countries (DL, EI, G, GD, GI, GM, GW, LX and ON) were active in the event.

Conditions were rated as poor with the usual 70MHz QSB making life difficult. In spite of that there were 59 QSOs over 500 kms of which 14 were over 600kms. The best QSO was between G7RAU and GM4ZUK/P at 696 kms. There was no Sporadic E this year.

Numerous comments from the entrants debated the duration of this event. While 56% of all QSOs took place in the first two hours, activity continued throughout the event with 20% of all QSOs taking place in the final two hours.

It is appreciated that there are pockets of FM activity around the country which are unlikely to make many contacts with entrants. However there is a worrying trend where stations come on to only work their colleague and no one else. This is not in the spirit of the contest and contacts such as these will be closely monitored in future events.

The equipment in use on 70MHz is varied with a variety of makes of transceivers. transverters, amplifiers and antennas in use. Homebrew remains an important source of equipment. There were some instances of poor signals but the majority of problems appear to have been amicably resolved.

Logging standards were variable with some extremely accurate logs while others lost significant numbers of points. While there were logging errors across callsigns, locators, RST and serial numbers, the highest number of errors were with the received RS(T).

Thanks go to G0IRN and GW8IZR for check logs.

Congratulations go to:

  • The Five Bells, GM4SIV/P, who won the open section and are awarded the VHF Managers Trophy.
  • Chris, G8APB, who won the single operator (fixed) section.
  • Ian, G0UWK/P, for winning the single operator (others) section and, as the highest scoring single operator entry, is awarded the Four Metre Cup.
  • The three sections runners up: G0VHF/P, G4DEZ and GM4ZUK/P.
  • Tony, G4NBS as the highest placed fixed station running 25watts or less into a single antenna.
  • 2E0TXT/P and 2E0VPX as the leading intermediate licensees and ON5VW as the leading overseas entrant.

These stations will receive certificates.

Comments from the logs
G0EHV/P
Poor WX and only fair radio conditions. QSB an issue at times and no Es! Contest is a little too long, very quiet in last hour yet still managed the odd QSO and even mults right up to last minute!
G0IRW
My first time on 4m, band seemed quite flat but nice to make a start on an interesting band.
G0JBA
Chucked an old Jaybeam folded dipole up on a scaffold pole tied to garden fence. Despite that I felt signals were down on previous years- even with my lash up!
G0UWK/P
Very wet, very windy. Got on site at 8.0am misty 15ft, got very wet. Dry taking down off site 6.15pm. Great fun thanks all. Deep qsb no es. One hour less please. All worked well down on fm qso this year or time was wrong f1 race.
G0VHF/P
Usual 4M tropo only.
G3LVP
Conditions average to poor. Apologies to stations lost in general local noise which now varies depending on direction between S4 & S7 (-120 ~ -110 dBm, RX with I/P terminated S1). Could do with more CW. I don't like later start/finish times or July date. This contest isn't just about working SpE (What SpE?)
G3MXH
Good conditions to the north. Some very wide signals on the band.
G3NYY/P
Totally flat conditions. Activity seemed very low. Weather atrocious! Abandoned the attempt at 1245 UTC and went home, due to rain and ever-strengthening gale-force winds.
G3TDH
Up and down, not many local stations. The /P guys all need medals to have braved WX!
G3ZVW
Activity extremely low. This led to me losing the will to carry on after 2 hours. This contest is too long in duration! Tnx all for QSOs.
G4DEZ
Very poor conditions
G4FJK/P
Wet & very windy. Antenna rotator went off track, & with the deep QSB, noisy band & strong wind, it was very hard work, but still good fun. Regarding the duration of this contest, I feel that six hours is right. There are trophies at stake, and some "endurance" element should be included, compared to the usual Sunday morning "Two hours after a nice comfortable breakfast" events. Portable stations might feel that a longer event justifies all the hard work that goes into their preparation, especially for those that travel to far flung places. SIV & TCU deserve a special mention from the CC. Many thanks - next year, we'll put in a competitive entry !
G4HGI
Qrp meant very low score. room for improvement ! Condx seemed grim by the way
G4HHJ
No Es. Deep QSB. Good to try out new amp.
G4NBS
High Local QRN to N made things difficult, also long slow QSB. Heard
GD3TCU
on FM but little else! Not sure how to do this - wud like to enter SF and add score to A1 Groups Championship points
G4SJH/P
Wet and Windy. considerable splatter on the band.
G4YPC/P
Very poor conditions, but we were lucky it was dry for antenna erection and take down. Contest length spot on BUT needs to start an hour or two earlier. Thanks to the contest committee.
G8APB
Last two hours waste of time. No Sporadic E. Wet & Windy
G8CUL
Windy conditions. Last hour was like watching paint dry!
G8LZE
Only last two hours - think some had given up by then
G8NEY/P
Average conditions, no Es. Heavy rain showers during set up and just before end of contest.
G8ONK
Wet and windy, gusting 40 mph, deep QSB
G8ZHP
Poor Conditions, Activity poor but hardly surprising with weather forecast! We had torrential rain & brief T&L storm. Thanks to all those portable who braved the weather to make a better event for us all. No Es here either!
GD3TCU/P
Very high winds and persistent rain made mast raising and operation difficult. Condx & activity poor. No Es.
GM4DIJ
Dire conditions to start, improved slightly later.
GM4FAM
First time I have got into double figures for a QSO count! Some Tropo about but openings too short to profit from.
GM4IGS
Missed a few due to QSB & poor conditions. No GI/EI heard (they watching the golf!). Had local thunder & lightning for a short spell.
GM4JR
HARD going. Lots of QRM/QRN. Had to stop for 1.5 hours thanks to lightening storm. No GIs either!
GM4SIV/P
Very wet & windy not allowing the antennas to be lifted - tower very well guyed. G0VTL & G1GSN made visit to site circa 03:00 to add more guys!! Wind abated slightly on Sunday but decision taken not to risk raising tower! Conditions poor - no Es
GM4ZUK/P
WX not as bad as forecast. Some leading stations are unbelievably deaf on this band. No Es this year and tropo only average. Real struggle for mults - No GI heard and many GM mults have no activity.
GW4RWR
Wet+,so I don't regret not being /P.
GW8ASD
Tough going with long periods of no new stations heard. ON5VW heard on but no contact made.
GW8IZR
Checklog - Poor wx conditions, a few short spells during the test.
M0ICK/P
Solid heavy rain for the duration, flat band but as usual very good fun.
M5ZZZ
Dull and wet.
MM0GPZ/P
Horrendous rain, Horrendous static that lasted for 15 minutes at a time. Started 1 20 late as I brought the elements for a different 4m antenna. ON5VW Again QRN from powerstation from time to time. Conditions under normal overhere. GB3BAA/B just above noise level, normally 549. Thanks for fun & points ! References Visible links 1. mailto:G4BVY@vhfcc.org?subject=144MHz%20Trophy%202007
