432MHz AFS 2011

There were some excellent conditions for participants this year, but mainly for stations located in the south of the UK. Stations from the Midlands northwards reported `No DX here!' The best DX was actually worked from outside the UK; PE1EWR worked EA1DDU at 1120km. However five UK stations made QSOs in excess of 1000km.

Most of the DX worked was to the south, with activity levels high in France for the French contest. Seven EA stations also appeared in the logs. Conditions were good to the East as well with 3 OKs worked, although activity was lower in this direction.

The entry level was up again, for the third year running. This year there were 34 teams in the AFS section (last year there were 26), and there were 76 entrants in total (last year there were 63). Camb-Hams fielded the most entrants - 11 in total.

Most of the country experienced high winds before and during the contest. This restricted antenna heights, particularly for portable stations, and prevented others putting up yagis at all.

Trowbridge and District Amateur Radio Club were clear winners this year, and get the G0ODQ trophy. Chesham and District Amateur Radio Society were in second place, after winning the trophy for the previous five years.

Congratulations to David Millard M0GHZ (IO81), who was the clear winner of the Single Operator Fixed section this year. Matthew Cabban G0XDI (IO91) was in second place. Keith Tatnal G4ODA (IO92), winner for the last three years, could only manage third this year, being too far north to take advantage of the conditions this time.

Bristol Contest Group G6YB/P (IO81), operated by Pete Lindsay G4CLA and Paul Gibson M1DSE, dominated the Open section. Dave Gilligan G1OGY/P, last year's winner, was in second place.

The following entrants also receive certificates:

  • Michael Salmon M6ROK/P - leading foundation station, Open section
  • Paul Johnson 2E0TXT/P - leading intermediate station, Open section
  • Chris Dennis M6XJP - leading foundation station, SF section
  • Tony Cater 2E0UOG - leading intermediate station, SF section
  • Frank Laanen PE1EWR - leading overseas station
  • Ken Punshon G4APJ - leading fixed station running 25W or less to a single antenna

As this is the final event in the Super League season, the final tables will be published shortly.

G0BWC/A
Very windy - put aerial 1m lower than usual. Worked everyone I could hear in first 2 hours, and then took aerial back down.
G0DVJ
Good conditions to EA / F. Was going to erect Yagi before contest but gales put paid to that. So just a token effort for the club with the vertical.
G0GRI/P
Good DX at start and for around 1.5hrs to south, some deep and rapid QSB No other preamp used so TS2000 barefoot. Output much down from the rated 50watts (battery voltage)
G0HFX/P
extreme SW gale--ant at lower height than normally--condx good to EA & F--v poor to north & east--tks to all for Qs--sri to several missed-- QSB & QRM/N high--local stn 30K wide--.330 to .360 unusable
G0VFW
Better than expected during 432MHz Contest!
G0XDI
Very good fun and finally some good conditions in this contest to the south. 2 EAs in log and lots of french.:
G1RVK/P
Very windy and cold on the hilltop.
G3BNE
Good to the South
G3JJZ
Hard work on HB9CV indoors!
G3MDG/A
Good to south and southeast, poor to west and north.
G3PIA
Great to the south:
G3UFY
Unable to extend tower due to high winds!
G3XDY
Good tropo to the South but what happened to PA/DL? Hard work in the last two hours.
G3YJR
Just giving away a few points.
G3ZVW
Bristol CG team. Good prop to SW France and N Spain.
G4BAO
Good activity, average conditions
G4DHF
Some good condx along the weather front to the SW of France. The strong winds prevented a more elaborate set-up. Activity was good making for an enjoyable event.
G4JLG
Better than usual to the South, but poor in comparison to those experienced by more Southerly stations
G4JQN
Good
G4ODA
Only the occasional Dx signal and zero from PA/ON. In the wrong place this time
G4SJH
Good Tropo to the S/SE into SW and Central France.
G4ZTR
Amazing !
G6KWA/P
V windy had real problem keeping aerial where I wanted it. Not portable weather !!
G6YB/P
Not the weather for portable operation, very high winds, left tower fully wound down. Good conditions to the south plus lots of activity from the French contest made for a great start. Conditions were even better before the start. Where were all the GM's -only worked one from here? Conditions seemed OK to the east too with a couple of strong DL's in the log. Very pleased with the score, much better than expected!
G8EOP
Fair good to uk south
G8HGN
Great DX to EA & northern France.Poor to NW, where were the IO83 guys?
G8JXV
Good activity and reasonable conditions. Points/QSO much higher than last year.
G8OHM
Conditions poor, not even one F or EA for us.
GD8EXI
Just fleeting signals from southern France otherwise normal conditions.
GM0ELP
Browsed e-bay had lunch chatted on Skype listened to 2m.....oh and worked 4 stns on 70cm in 4 hrs Who said males can't multi-task? Thanks to all who worked me :-)
GW8ASD
Strange conditions with no GMs heard. Beam headings very odd. No conditions up here!
M0COP/P
Dire
M0GHZ
Excellent condx to south :-))
M0ICK/P
Very windy, only managed to get half of my 21 Ele H/B DL6WU in the air, rapid QSB and very poor conditions to South where most of the points were. Worked all I could hear on 20 watts
M0MCV
In the right part of the country for a change!
M0VFC
Post-contest investigation of the IC-910 suggests actual TX power may have been much lower than 75w, but not sure when the failure occurred. Not a fantastic 70cm QTH, but at least the mast held up well in the wind!
M1MHZ
After late evening/night antenna and tower work I got wrong feeder for 70Cms antenna!! As 2&70 are on same tower I assumed [incorretly] that I had wrong feeder so changed over - - to 2m antennas and spent 1st hour on those with very strange beam headings BUT heard several "F" stations. After changing feeder to correct one I didn't hear any more "F" stations but beam headings now accurate! No LNA but still heard more than I could work on single antenna :(
M6ROK
Windy
PE1EWR
Not too much activity from the UK, relatively more activity from France. Excited about the EA's though they did not volunteer a serial number, maybe due to language problems? Or just because it was an English Contest?
