70 MHz CW 2011

This is the second year of the 70MHz CW contest after it was revived. Activity and entries show a healthy rise with twenty three this year (a 35% increase). In total there were forty nine stations (a 44% increase) active in DL, G, GM, GW and ON.

Although half the contacts were made in the first hour, activity continued throughout with a fifth of the contacts taking place in the final hour. In a contest like this, multipliers are key and the ability to hunt down those final multipliers determined the final placings. Conditions were rated as average to poor with the four metre QSB causing difficulties. Six contacts over 600kms and a further thirteen over 500kms were completed with GM4ZUK/P involved in fourteen of these.

This band provides a challenge to provide the equipment for a competitive station and there was a vast array homebrew and commercial transverters and amplifiers and a variety of antenna types. No equipment failures were reported.

Logging standards were variable from perfect logs to a third of entrants who will note that they lost over a third of their claimed scores. The major sources of error were the locator and the incoming RST.

Congratulations go to the section winners: Allan, GM4ZUK/P and John, G4ZTR. Stations marked (*) will receive certificates.

Comments from the logs:
G3LVP
Conditions Average. Good to find some new stations on 4m. It would help if stations that operate outside our allocation indicate where they are listening when calling CQ.
G3NYY/P
Conditions flat; low activity. A lot of people on 4m still seem to be "all mouth and no ears"! However, by the end of the contest there was only one station that I had "heard but not worked".
G3TCT
Sorry to lose GM4IGS thru QSB. Condx mediocre, worked same number of stations as last year
G3TCU
Conditions and activity average. I lost about 1.5 hrs due to S9 local QRN
G3UKV
Enjoyed the CW on 4m. Conditions average.
G3WIE
Nothing special. The usual urban noise level was not lowered for the contest.
G3XBY/P
Nice breezy day on the Quantocks.
G4AIU
Conditions good.
G4ASR
Tropo conditions rather poor.
G4RCD/A
Operating from my Dad, G3JYP's QTH. Part-time effort!
G4RYV
Deep QSB at times, high local noise.
GM4IGS
Conditions difficult at times with QSB & sporadic QRN. Lost some QSO's due to the QSB. Pleased to contact GM4ODA/P on Tiree. No sporadic E heard. No GW, EI or GI station heard.
GM4VVX/P
Rain throughout ! Condx poor. Heard 3 G callsigns in last hour but no qso. Tnx for the many QRZs Hi Hi
GM4ZUK/P
WX showery. Not great activity but enjoyed the contest. Lots of 4m regulars missing.
