May 144MHz 2011

Going by the comments from entrants this year's contest was more a test of perseverance and stamina than radio contesting skills. High winds in many parts of the UK made portable operation difficult. Even so, entry levels have remained steady and I'm sure most will be back next year in hope that the ever elusive May 2m Contest where the weather is fine and conditions are favourable will finally come to pass.

In the Open Section, we find the A1 Contest Group at the top of the leader board, well ahead of the chasing pack, headed by the Five Bells Group in second place. It's interesting to see that the number of mults worked by all the entrants in the open section is very similar. The Wiltshire Wonderer's managed to find the most, with 114.

Bryn, G4DEZ managed to make another monster score this year to retain his place at the top of the SF section. In second place, Richard G4HGI, running only 25 watts, heads a group of stations located in IO83 and IO93 squares.

Matt G0XDI, who normally operates with the Black Sheep CG, found himself without a team this year , but nevertheless went out single handed and heads the Single Operator Others section, with the highest Single-Op score of the contest. I'm sure his experience in operating portable in many of the UK activity contest sessions was invaluable. Brain Jones M6OXO operating as MW6OXO/P was in second place with an excellent score running only 1 watt!

Richard, GD8EXI managed to push last year's winner, Steve G3ZVW into second spot in the 6 Hours Single Operator Fixed section. Although Richard had less mults he managed to out score Steve from his site on the Isle of Man.

At the top of the 6 Hours Others section are two club stations, the Bracknell Club, M0BRA in first place and the Hadley Wood CG, G4STV in second.

Congratulations and certificates also go to the following,

In the SF Section:

M6XJP, the leading foundation licensee . 2E0JWJ, the leading intermediate licensee . PE1EWR, the leading overseas entrant.

In the 6S Section:

G4XPE, leading station using 25W or less and a single antenna and 2E0BXD, leading intermediate licensee.

In the 6O Section:

2E0VXX/P, leading intermediate licensee and M6XBX, leading foundation licensee.

Pete Lindsay, G4CLA.

Comments from the logs:
G0EHV/P
Conditions average at best but both slow deep and fast flutter QSB made things difficult at times. Very windy on site.
G0PKT
Started off well but quickly ran out of people to speak to. We worked all we could hear and it was deathly quiet in the last hour.
G0VHF/P
Avg conditions, overall. Brief Es Saturday, mid afternoon. No significant tropo enhancement. As ever, this contest suffers from unmanaged expectations.
G0XDI/P
It gets harder to build a station of this size on your own. I really missed the guys one this one. Conditions seemed OK but very heavy QSB on Sunday. Activity seemed way down from the UK again.
G3PIA
Poor activity, conditions average
G3TTC
poor
G3UFY
Tower retracted because of wind!
G3ULT/P
Hard work without a rotator.
G3XBY
Flat conditions, heavy local QRM in all directions except 145 degrees where noise level was only S7. Really depressing! Can't wait to get back to Devon in September!
G3YJR
The only continental I heard was PI7CIS/b!
G3ZVW
Activity level low. Conditions poor. Tnx everyone for the QSOs.
G4DEZ
Terrible conditions and lots of splatter from local station.
G4HGI
Low activity thanks to backpackers coming on ! Seriously windy
G4HHJ
More activity on 50 and 70MHz, where there was superb SpE opening.
G4XPE
Conditions fair but low activity
G4ZAP/P
Just on the edge of the Es, lucky to be called by IT9!
G5FZ/P
Great contest plenty of fun
G5LK/P
Quite slow with deep qsb on Sat - Missed Es Very windy on Sunday - Hard going
G7OOD
very quite on band.
G8DOH
Conditions generally below average, with GD, GM weak, conditions to south east better, but much QSB.
G8EOP
Poor to NW and W SW. Fair to S & SE Only one GM & GI worked and only short time on band due to F1 and visitors>
G8HGN
Ok for 1st 2 hours or so then had to rely on Europe to make QSOs. No GI/GM/GW. Nil from IO83 again. Two ES QSO's to Italy.
G8MCA
Where was everyone? Very poor activity.
G8NEY/P
Very windy, rain over night. Deep QSB but some good dx. Great fun, sadly several GMs lost in QSB.
G8ONK
Average conditions, wind gusting to 45 mph stopped play
G8OTI/P
Not bad at all. Only on for 40 minutes to give away a few points.
G8SRC/P
A very windy site, a late start due to pole issues and RF connector faults. QSO's really dropped during the last hour. Worked just as many stations as UKAC where we have less time.
GD8EXI
Conditions OK but low activity in my chosen 6 hrs
GJ7DNI
not very good only qrv Sunday
GM3PMB
Very Poor! But the big stations on the South Coast romped through throughout. Amazing! High winds and rain static at S9. Even GB3VHF was silent. Thanks for all the points to all who struggled.
GM4JR
HARD going! Low activity, conditions awful. High winds, driving rain - God help the backpackers! Made more contacts on 4m over the same period! 300+ on 6m :-)
GW3ATZ
Very poor conditions. Low activity. Needed to be down south to benefit from multipliers used.
GW8ZRE/P
Main entry in Backpackers.Terrible gales reduced height mast 49degrees F cold after returning day before from EA6!No GI/GM/EI or EU DX.
M0BRA
Hard work with deep QSB
M0DSZ
Mediocre to poor
M0LCR
General DX Log Good conditions and some sporadic E
M0MCG/P
Slow going from the SW of the country, quite windy at times but enjoyed the contest.
M3JAC
Flat, flat, flat as yer 'at!!!! - no DX worked, although some GI's and GM's heard.
M6XBX/P
Rather windy and plenty of QSB
M6XJP
Poor conditions. Heavy QSB all weekend. Hard work for us ten watters! Thanks for the perseverance of many.
MU3ZLQ
Again hard work for MU3
MW6OXO/P
