May 432MHz to 248GHz UHF Contest 2011.

In general, conditions were reported as being quite poor. Some very strong winds in some & heavy rain in the North & West while others enjoyed nice sunny & warm weather. Entry level was similar to last year as were conditions. There were reports of tropo enhancement from the East Coast to Norway by monitoring beacons on Saturday, but unfortunately a lack of DX activity produced no contacts.

Congratulations go to the overall winners of the Open section, Colchester Contest Group & to John Quarmby G3XDY as winner of the Single Operator Fixed section, the runners-up Northern Lights Contest Group in the Open section & Neil Underwood G4LDR, runner-up in the Single Operator Fixed section. Congratulations also to individual band winners & certificate winners as marked in the results table with as asterisk.

Many thanks to all entrants & active stations & very best of luck for the next major UHF contest in October.

Richard G4WFR

Comments from the logs:
G0BWC/P
Drizzly at start, but some sunshine later, with gusty winds developing
G0XDI
432MHz: Conditions better Sunday morning but Activity low 1.3GHz: couldn't get station working until Sat evening. I was surprised what I could hear at times. GM3HAM/p was loud at times but I need more power on this band
G3CKR/P
432MHz: Very little activity in the 2 hrs that we were QRV on Sunday morning. We had to finish early as main objective was Trophy on Saturday. 1.3GHz: Only set up to give any pts away in between gaps of the 10ghz operation. 10GHz: First real outing on 10ghz for us. Conditions flat but everything worked OK. Seems like a good start but hard to judge. See you in October contest!
G3PIA
432MHz: Wet. Low activity
G3SVJ/P
1.3GHz: Average condition, very low activity
G3XDY
432MHz: Very quiet - when I switched on at 0645z on Sunday I couldn't hear a single signal apart from the PI7CIS beacon 1.3GHz: Some nice aircraft scatter DX, tropo conditions very flat 2.3GHz: Conditions poor. Heard DM7A (JO60LJ) on aircraft reflections but not enough for a QSO 3.4GHz: Very poor conditions or equipment problems (or both) Many failed attempts on this band 5.7GHz: Generally flat, a hint of RS on one or two QSOs, but no real DX 10GHz: Generally poor, tried Aircraft Reflection with DL0GTH at 684km, Copied callsigns from him but not enough for QSO
G3YJR
432MHz: Sounded like a flat band from here. 1.3GHz: Generally easier going than 70cm.
G3Z
1.3GHz: Conditions seemed poor activity very low and wx terrible 2.3GHz: Fair. Lack of activity. Went QRT about 19 hrs UTC 5.7GHz: Some RS but very low activity. WX worsened in the evening. 10GHz: Some good R/S, but low activity, especially on 2m talkback + WX. Went QRT in heavy rain & with around 1900 UTC. Probably no more 'All band uWave contests from Telford group ! Very demanding, esp. out /P in gales.
G4HGI
432MHz: Dire poor condx / activity.
G4LIP/P
432MHz: A big thank you to Bob, G4BAH for use of the G0KPW site for the contest. Wx was fine and at times very warm. The LA beacon was 59+ on Saturday morning, but conditions during the contest were poor with with slight improvement on Sunday morning. Activity levels seemed down, especially from PA and ON. UK activity not bad, for a weekend contest that is! Great fun despite the poor conditions. Pete, G4CLA and Chris, G0HFX.
G4MVU
24GH
z: Poor conditions not many on
G5B
432MHz: Flat as a pancake at start. Very poor all contest from an inland location at sea level. Boredom set in and cut entry short.
G6GVI
2.3GHz: Using a strong reflection from some buildings on the South side of the town!
G8DOH
432MHz: Only on from 09.00 Sunday. Conditions were as bad as conditions for March 144/432 MHz contest were good.
G8HGN
432MHz: Trophy plus some activity on Sunday. Condx a little better Sunday
GM3HAM/P
432MHz: Conditions poor. torrential rain for most of the time 1.3GHz: Torrential rain for most of the contest. Major equipment problems Transceiver stopped tuning - ended up fixed frequency
GM4BYF/P
2.3GHz: Torrential rain for most of the time. Major equipment failure but managed to fix it after 2 hours work. Only operational for 3 hours - reasonable at that time
GM4JR
432MHz: VERY hard going, WX not great, CDX not too bad. As usual lots of entirely workable stations missed points because they don't try north. Quite a shame. Thanks for all the points to those who worked from all over on both bands. 1.3GHz: VERY hard going, WX not great, CDX not too bad. Unlike 70cm, almost all stations who tried completed....ops keener for points on 23cm?
GM8OTI/P
On for an hour or so to try for contacts. Weather awful, conditions poor. GR0LGS 1.3GHz: Only 1 Station worked - heard a few others, but they couldn't hear me !
GW4EVX
432MHz: Low activity level, very hard going!
GW8ASD
432MHz: Interesting conditions. Just giving a few points away. 1.3GHz: Conditions seemed poor but some surprising contacts. I think I must have found Frances' answer to Bolton Wireless Club. :-) 2.3GHz: A new square and DXCC with my 500mW.
M1CRO/P
432MHz: Nothing startling. 1.3GHz: Average. 2.3GHz: Heard Oslo Beacon LA4UHG throughout Saturday evening: 419 to 589. No takers! 3.4GHz: It worked just fine.
24GH
z: New DXCC!
MW6OXO/P
432MHz: Cloudy, cold wet & windy heard German stations never got the QSO
