1.3GHz & 2.3GHz Trophy Contests 2011

The entry level for these contests which run during the IARU UHF contest once again shows higher activity than in previous years. In total, 157 different stations were worked on 1.3GHz & 44 stations on 2.3GHz. The number of logs received was also up on previous years.

Weather & radio conditions were reported as being good and Five Bells CG managed to work over 1,000km on 1.3GHz into SM. Warrington CG successfully worked a distance of over 900km on both bands.

Most equipment survived the contests. Fortunately with good weather, there was no chance of waterlogged equipment as last year. One reported equipment casualty was from Paul, GW8IZR who had to do mid contest repair to a GaAs FET preamp.

Congratulations go to the Colchester CG of Colchester RA for winning the 1.3GHz VHF Contest Committee Cup and to the South Birmingham RS for winning the 2.3GHz G6ZR Memorial Trophy. Congratulations also go to all other certificate winners.

Many thanks to all entrants and stations that were active on the bands.

Richard G4WFR

Comments from the logs:

1.3GHz:

G0BWC/P
The warmest day since April! Some contacts on FM too
G3CKR/P
We were just on the egde of the tropo. Was to high with the dish should have been 9 ft of the ground very hard to find PA's just audible Sunday made up the number via the tropo all changed
G3OHM/P
Activity and conditions seemed much better this year.
G3TCU/P
Condx seemed average, UK activity poor. The Wx was extremely hot and our site was only mediocre
G3XDY
Great conditions to Germany, a few Scandinavians and a couple of OKs. Challenge for the RX with many v strong signals & radar.
G4HGI
good rx extremely poor tx
G4NBS
Curates Egg of a contest, Conditions not as good as predicted but some nice Dx around Not near enough to coast or high enough to work what others heard.
G5B
Condx were not with us until the very very last!
G7APD
Very quiet
G8CUL
Poor activity
G8ONK
Fair conditions but few stations
GM4JR
HARD going. Cdx fair, but no beams going north unless physically dragged screaming and kicking.
GW8IZR
Cant say it was as good as expected, watched beacons drop to noise level at start of 'test. Spent 30 Mins swapping gaas fet mid session then drank a little wine ;-)
M0DDC/P
First 23cm contest for us. Few long distance contacts in UK but we benefited from the sea path into Europe. The contact with OZ was a special bonus. Thanks to all, Blackwater Contest Group
M1CRO/P
Coastal enhancement

2.3GHz:

G3CKR/P
Was out of the condition just on the egde.
G3OHM/P
Activity and conditions seemed much better this year, but maybe running 400w helps :-)
G3XDY
Good conditions and activity, some very strong signals.
G4NBS
Struggle with QRP but interesting 1st time on band from home. Conditions were much better before contest started? Not quite in the right place to work Eu stations
G8CUL
Poor activity
M1CRO/P
Coastal enhancement allowed most of Europe to appreciate our poor signal until we worked out what was wrong and fixed it. A little too late for this event, it has to be said.
