144 MHz Activity Contests 2001 Results

These are the results for the first set of the activity contests which now run almost every Tuesday night on one band or another. These events are a great source of activity on a weekday evening, and are now only 2.5 hours long, making for a short, sharp, operating session. They are also co-ordinated with activity contests elsewhere in Europe on the same evenings, and this makes for good levels of activity. This is demonstrated in the results below, with leading stations making over 100 QSOs per night, and almost everyone working well into Europe, even with small stations. There were a few small auroras during these events, and this helped Clive O'Hennessy, GM4VVX make good QSOs from his home station right in the North of Scotland. It also helped some other stations to make good DX.

Andy Cook, G4PIQ wins the Single Operator fixed section, and Roger Piper, G3MEH takes the runner-up slot, ousting Nigel Wilson, G4VVZ operating G4ZAP by making the most of his chances from operating 11 from the 12 sessions. Alan Horne, G0TPH takes the certificate for leading station with 25W and a single antenna, and, as usual, Frank Laanen, PE1EWR wins the leading overseas station award.

The Open section was not well supported this year - largely due to the Foot & Mouth outbreak in 2001, but Dave Hewitt, G8ZRE operated portable from both Wales and England to win. Second place was shared by a multi operator entry by G0NFA and M0BTZ, and Tim Boon, M0AFC going out single handed portable in January!

The VHFCC would like to apologise for the enormous amount of time that has passed between the end of this set of contests and the results appearing which was caused by some unique circumstances for the committee. We have also had some problems with paper and disk based logs for this event and are concerned that there maybe a small number of missing entries. If you find yourself omitted from the table, please contact me (vhfcc.chairman@rsgb.org.uk or QTHR) and I'll correct the situation. I can assure you that we'll work hard to ensure that this does not happen again.

Andy Cook, G4PIQ.
