There was an encouraging increase in the number of entrants to the 2001 cumulatives although GW8ASA and G8OHM would have appreciated some competition in their respective sections.
It was generally agreed that the first session offered best opportunity for Dx and with stations active in 11 different countries and 38 different locator squares during the series there were more than enough to qualify for the RSGB 432MHz squares award, (6 countries / 30 squares). The problem here would be that if you were fortunate enough to have worked the stations you would still have to get the QSL card confirmations.
Top Dx of the series was the contact between GW8ASA/P and F1VBW at 994km. Eight further contacts were logged at over 700km and more than 17.5% of contacts logged were in excess of 300km. Congratulations to Robert Ferguson, GD4GNH, who had the top score in four of the five sessions and won the single operator section ahead of Peter Tribe, G8FBG.
After several years of closely fought cumulative contests the South Birmingham Radio Society, G8OHM, although unopposed won the multi operator section with some creditable scores as did Gordon Wyatt, GW8ASA, who won the single operator other section amassing the top session score of any station, 13674, on 29th October. Certificates also went to PE1EWR, leading overseas station, 2E1GUA leading novice licensee and to G4SJH leading station running 25w or less to a single antenna.

G3MEH s1 Above average conditions with reasonable activity. s4 Yes, I really
didn't work a single station in the last hour!
G3YJR - An excellent signal from my best DX (G8FBG)!
G3YDY - best session 12/10/01 above average - all others average
G4APJ - Finally I manage to get on for one, and then conditions are like that!
Terrible, with slight 'lifts' to bad. Very poor reports compared to normal,
and couldn't even make it with regulars such as G7ULL. Still, at least it was
a few contacts on 70!
G8FBG - It seems I missed the best session which appears to have been the first.
Session four was much better than the other three but no tropo came as far east
as Surrey although I gather it was fairly good to France from the West. Overall
these are fun contests. Can't say I am very keen on having to do six next year
throughout the year just to put an entry in. It means almost unlimited space
on the mast!
G8OHM - Conditions and activity poor.
GD4GNH - poor conditions in west better on east coast lift conditions did not
occur on contest nights!
M0GHZ - Always good fun to operate, conditions not wonderful unfortunately
M5FUN s2 - I couldn't pump the mast up due to very very strong winds and that
aerials were being blown away from where they should have been pointing. s3
- Conditions from JO00 seemed worse than usual.
2E1GUA - s1, s2, s5 not bad. s3 not good from the new Icom 706.
M0BPQ - interesting contest. first time on band in 10 years so cannot comment
on conditions, but suprised to work JO42. 70cm ssb used to be my favourite band.
I look forward to getting on more. Only finished rebuilding tvtr 1 hour before
I started the test. shame I am unavailable for the final session but look forward
to NAC style monthly format next year.
