With the lifting of the F&M restrictions the portable stations made a welcome return to the entry list this year. In the multi-op section there was an East/West battle for 1st place fought out between The Bristol Contest Group in Wales and the A1 and Five Bells groups in Norfolk and Lincolnshire. The two-man Bristol Group made a special effort to go to a higher site than usual and hopefully get a better all-round take-off and work as many multipliers as possible. The A1 Group were also in a slightly different site to normal and had some good contacts into Europe, but less luck when beaming back to the UK. Further up the cost Five Bells ran a smaller station as a test, with 4 op's on the sick list. But it was those extra multipliers that brought the Bristol Group the top stop, congratulation to them.
In the Single Op Fixed section Roger Piper, G3MEH took top honours; Roger described conditions as variable, with deep fading on long distance stations. But found collecting Postcodes difficult and was surprised not to be able to work a single station with a London postcode! G0RMG/P, who made the most of the variable conditions, made a successful move from the 6 hour section to lead the field in the 24 hour Others section.
In the 6 hour sections, Andy G4PIQ won the Single Op Fixed section, despite still only having 3 out of 4 aerials working on his main system, and Tim M0AFC came first in the others section. Finally, G4RYV receives a certificate for the highest placed 25w/single aerial station in the Single Op fixed section.
