144MHz Low Power Contest 2004

Most entrants found propagation conditions nothing special but in much of the UK the weather was good, attracting out more than twice last year’s number of single operator portable stations. This year’s entry included several non-standard logs, such as two which were timed in BST, making for extra work during adjudication. In future you may be penalised for this, so it’s worth spending a few minutes checking your entry before pressing the ‘send’ button.

In the Single operator Fixed section Bryn Llewellyn G4DEZ held onto first place, A.S. Jordan G0HAS comfortably took second place and Frank Laanen PE1EWR and James Beatwell get certificates as the leading overseas entrant and leading intermediate licensee. Andrew Warburton M0LKB won the Single operator Others section, with Nick Garbett M1DDD in second place and Clive Warren M3OTP the leading foundation licensee. The A1 Contest Group took the honours in the Multi-operator section helped by extra multipliers picked up on FM, while Colchester Contest Group of Colchester Radio Amateurs took second place, with 2E0EBV/P operated by 2E0EBV and 2E0FMS the leading intermediate licence station. Thanks to G8ZK/P for their check log.

Entrants’ Comments and Remarks

2E0EBV/P

fine warm and some good dx great fun

2E1GUA

Good day for me, the France was good fun.

G0HAS

30 minutes late due to murphy

G0VHF/P

Our gear survived. Ended up battery powered though; through generator failure.

G1KHX

Fair, to good. Would suggest 4 hours long enough!

G2HDF/P

Had a great time. The weather was excellent. It was a pleasure to work a little DX using low power.

G3MEH

Computer failure (HDD) meant I restarted the contest at 1548. My sincere apologies for the inconvenience this caused and thanks to those who worked me for a second time. Conditions seemed flat at the start but picked up a little during the evening.

G4DBL

Conditions nothing special?

G4DEZ

Activity lower than the cumulatives not much DX.

G4IRC/P

Conditions average

G4ZAP/P

Poor audio at the start. FT225RD fail and was replaced - No more reports.

G6GVI/P

Very hot indeed, mitigated only slightly by a breeze. No sign of the tropo ducting which was prevalent earlier in the day.

G6HOU/P

Managed 2 hours only due to a late start but good fun and improved by QRP ODX.

G7ADF

Not a serious entry. Tied the sota beam to the garden fence and sat in a deckchair sunbathing. Just 2.5 hours of S&P for a bit of fun in the sun. Very enjoyable way to spend a saturday afternoon.

G8SRL

Conditions were not bad and was a reasonable amount of activity with more frenchmen than usual. The temperature was too high but the early finish allowed me to get to the pub for a pint.

G8VOI/P

Seemed quiet, general trend in VHF contests. Why was contest moved from traditional July date? Clashed with other local events, hence finish time. Wx good!

GM8XQS/P

First entry as a GM whilst on holiday in the Borders. Conditions seemed reasonable but unable to evaluate much as first op from this site. Wx was glorious and made for a very enjoyable day as usual. The new date and time for this contest are excellent.

GM4IGS/P

The weather was sunny/cloudy 10mph wind. Conditions were quite good with the usual QSB. No GD and only GI contacts, but any enjoyable contest none the less. I must get a pre-amp and decent coax!!)

GW8ZRE/P

Excellent weather and thanks to VHFCC for reducing the hours much better.

M0BAO/P

No DX worked A bit slow at times

M0BPQ/P

Hot hot hot! Too hot to sit either in the car or outside so I gave up and only did this part time. Average condx though.....

M0BRA/P

Slow

M0LKB/P

Poor on air conditions. lots of noise and lots of quiet periods. I even had a dead keyer on FM trying to interfere. Their location was in South Cumbria.

M1DDD/P

Average conditions. Not many stations to the North of me. Weather beautiful in the Peak District

M1MHZ

A Very pleasant BBQ - spoilt by ......... Poor activity as is usual for this event - if it wasn't a championship event it would probably not attract our entry hence electing to run a very ordinary
station from home. Despite having a continental contest on there was very little activity from the continent. Was there too much QRM there from QRO operating to notice our 25 watts? - Maybe we need a Publicity Officer on the VHFCC - someone who is able to publicise regularly and in the right places that the RSGB have a contest ?????? Maybe there is a need to negotiate for a "special G multiplier" for continental stations in our low power event.

M3OTF/P

Very warm day with a cooling breeze. Fibre glass mast and 7AH gel cell. Running 2.5W

M5ADF

Good fun, plenty of activity
