144MHz AFS 2004
Conditions in this years contest were generally described as poor, although the best DX distances worked by the top 10 entrants was in fact greater than the last couple of years. Although the number of entries and overall activity were down.
A number of entries were received with incorrect or missing information in the cover sheets. The cover sheet is an important part or your entry, in some ways just as important as the log itself. Please read the rules and take time to fill it in correctly, especially the field that indicates the section you are entering. A number of entrants are confusing the “SO” and “SF” sections.
This year the Colchester Radio Amateurs return to the top of the leader board of the AFS table ahead of the Wythall ARC in second place. Congratulation to both these clubs, not only topping the leader board but also managing to have more than 5 members enter the contest.
In the individual tables, Andy G4PIQ once again put together a very impressive score to take first place in the Single-Op fixed section from Dave G7RAU in second place. In the Multi-Op section, the winning score came from G8CUL, the Harwell Club station and the Wythall Club G1WAC was runner up. In the Single-Op others section Dave, G4CQR/P took first place, reporting good conditions from his portable site, with Hilton, MW0OPS/P, who could only operate for three hours, in second place
Congratulations also go to John, G4ZTR, the leading Single aerial 25w station, 2E1GUA, the leading intermediate licensed station and Bob, M3RCV the leading foundation licensed entry.

Comments from the logs
G0ADH:
Great difficulty due to vocal cord problem, but surprised
with success of calling in CW.
G0DVJ:
Activity reasonable - Much QSB
G0EYO:
Conditions poor heavy QSB
G0THY:
Reasnoable activity compared to recent years.
G1OGY:
Operating somewhat fragmented due to other commitments.
Thanks for all the QSOs
G2BOF:
HARD GOING!!!!
G3IRQ:
Conditions below normal very bad to north
G3MEH:
Conditions rather flat with occasional short lived enhancements.
Reasonable activity, not as good as last year. Suffered a power
cut from 0750 to 0840 so had a narrow escape!
G3VQO/P:
just another brief foray to a convenient hilltop !!!!
G3WRR:
First VHF contest from home QTH in 27 years!
Conditions seemed quite good but I couldn't hear the continentals from
here as the ground rises sharply to the East just behind the house.
G4CQR/P:
GOOD CONDITIONS REASONABLE WEATHER
G4DFI:
Must get a beam of some sort next year!!
G4MRS:
Many disasters.....
G4PIQ:
Conditions OK, but activity not great - even from Germany. Decent activity
in first couple of hours from France in their contest though.
G6GVI/P:
Very damp and misty, but mild.
Propagation was not too bad: some good contacts could be had with 10W and
a lot of patience!
G7RAU:
Up a little east but not stunning. Still good fun and nice activity!
G8CUL:
Few G stations - lots of continental ones!
G8HGN:
Some DX at times, but too many periods with no replies to CQ's
G8SRL:
Conditions were only average with occasional enhanced paths.
G8ZRE:
No EU DX heard ,worked all I could hear pity there was not more
activity in the North of England.
M0BPQ/P:
Forgot about this one. Was having a tune around and found people calling CQ contest so joined in for the last 3/4 hour
M0COK:
Extremely varying conditions. Hard at times and noisy
Some nice but brief openings for dx.
M0DDT:
Only got back for the last 90 mins but enjoyable
all the same - not much DX within this time though!
M0NAS:
Only managed 1 hour's operating
M3RCV:
Glad to add my 10w to the AFS contest and support
Cray Valley RS. Pleased with 70 QSOs.
M5BXB:
Very average conditions. Some nice DX.
Very Enjoyable but hard work!
Not bad for my first go in AFS
