2nd 144MHz Backpackers Contest of 2005

The thirty-seven contestants were greeted with either rain or sun (depending on location). Once again, band conditions were mixed with very few of the stations able to work continental DX.

The standard of logging was better in this session than in the 1st 144MHz Backpacker contest with an average of nearly 9% of points lost.

The rules concerning permitted power sources for this series of contest appear to be confusing some entrants. The main rule on power sources is that “all equipment used during the contest must be battery powered”.

The use of a Petrol / Gas / Diesel generator for charging batteries is not permitted. This includes a motor vehicle engine. If the contest equipment is operated from a vehicle supply, the engine must be switched off for the duration of the contest. The use of a Petrol / Gas / Diesel generator to power a computer is also not permitted.

Finally, contestants are reminded that masts with an outside diameter of greater than 2 inches are not permitted.

In the 10W Multi-operator section, G0KYS/P was the clear winner with the TMARG Contest Group, M0TMR/P in second place.

The 3W Multi-operator section was won by G0HDV/P with Chris Own & Stuart Dobbs, M0WEN/P, in second place.

The10W Single Operator section was won by Nick Gregory, G0HIK/P with Geoff Morris, G3ATZ/P in second place.

The 3W Single Operator section was won by Dave Hewitt, GW8ZRE/P with Charlie Jordan, GW0PZO/P as the runner-up.

The leading Intermediate Station certificate was won by Ralph Gault, 2I0RPM/P. Thank you to G3MEH, G3VQO and M3OVL for supplying very useful check logs.
