1st 50MHz Contest 2006

50MHz propagation stayed sound asleep under the duvet for this event. Normally one expects at least a little MS, but there was nothing more than tropo available even for the bigger stations. Despite this, entries were slightly up on last year, and it's good to see some new stations appearing in the tables - in some cases, near the top.

Keith, G4ODA (IO92 / PE), had a spectacular win in the SF section, with Roger G3MEH (IO91 / HP) in second place but only managing 60% of Keith's score. In the Open section things were closer at the top, with Alan G0IFC/P (single-op) beating G4STV/P (alias Steve G3ZVW and Mike G7TWC) by a margin of around 10%. Both these stations were in IO80 / EX - clearly that was the place to be.

Congratulations to those mentioned, who earn certificates. The 25W/single antenna certificate goes to Keith M0DZB, and the Leading Intermediate certificate goes to Fred, 2E0TLB. Well done to them - perhaps their success will encourage others to have a go next time.

All but 2 entries were received by email - maybe the remaining paper-entrants can try out the online log entry system next time - help is available from Committee members should you need it. Others who transcribe their logs from paper into computer format could work on their accuracy - the adjudication ruled invalid many contacts where the error was probably attributable to the transcription process.

Comments received from entrants are summed up by the following from GD0EMG (GD0TEP and GD4GNH):

"The worst conditions I've ever known on 6m!"

... and they would know.
