144MHz AFS 2006

Conditions during last years 2m AFS were generally described as very poor to abysmal. I'm not sure what words would best describe this years event. Scores and entries were well down. Even the trend of ever increasing portable entries was reversed this year with poor weather keeping many of the would-be portables at home.

The Colchester Radio Amateurs managed to keep their top place in the AFS results again this year, but by a much-reduced margin, with the Harwell ARS coming a close second. Congratulations must go to Intermediate Licensee Matt, 2E0XIS whose score made a big contribution to the Colchester team. Matt also receives a certificate as the leading Intermediate Licensee in the SF section.

Congratulations go to the winners and runners up in each section. Certificates also go to Gareth, G4HIP operating at G7BBC for the highest placed 25w single antenna entry and Simon M3OAJ the leading Foundation Licensee entry.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that the committee have accepted a generous offer from Roger G3MEH to donate a Trophy for future 144MHz AFS contests. The G3MEH Trophy will be awarded to the winning club/society starting in 2007.

Pete G4CLA.

2E0KZC:
Poor conditions - very hard
G0ADH:
Conditions don't get much worse than that. Very poor propagation and very high winds
G0MUD:
Poor conditions
G0SAC:
A combination of last years G7SAC/p and G3OLX teams in a nice warm Scout hut with better equipment! Discovered that the borrowed 200W amp when operated at 150W overheated and shutdown. Seemed to stabilise at 100W
G0THY:
2M AFS seems to have less activity every year wonder why?
G3NNG:
Terrible
G3RRH:
Poor,with deep QSB
G3WHK:
Very flat conditions
G8CUL:
Probably the worst Dec 2m contest I've entered Hard work, few stations - but FUN!
M0DDT:
Drove from Cumberland in the high winds and then had just an hour to go in for the contest.
M5BFL:
Abysmal conditions. worst known in 10yrs of vhf ctest Not even a f or on qso High wind at times
2E0XIS:
Slow going. Not Many Ops, no continental openings
G0EYO:
poor conditions
G3FIJ:
Very poor - particularly at the start
G4DEZ:
Very poor conditions little DX about apart from DH3NAN
G4ZTR:
EME array too sharp for contesting!
G8HGN:
Pretty poor conditions/activity,little from Europe.
M0NAS:
Very poor conditions. Disappointing result.
G0GJV:
Not a lot of activity
G0KYS:
Deep QSB. VERY quiet down here. 82% QSOs over 200km.
G0RRC:
RF very flat. Until very end, see best DX
G0VFW:
Very poor VHF conditions, not many QSO's further than IO91 square. Only DX DG9YIHG which was very unexpected
G4XPE:
Poor propogation with deep qsb.
G6XDI:
Very poor conditions and low activity making it rather hard going
G7BBC:
Slow starting, awful condx to begin, little activity. Probably G7BBC's last contest as works QTH is moving and there is no room for the station
G8ZRE:
Terrible conditions were there no other AFS outside IO91. Long periods of silence. At 2pm had to lower mast due to gales.
G0HKG:
Deep depression, V. strong SW wind, 996mB. Very few Euro Stns although PA, ON & F beacons normal. Much QSB in PM. Low turnout.
G3MEH:
Propagation seemed very poor during the morning but improved to just poor in the afternoon. ODX of 551km says it all. At least the wind dropped enough by the start so I could raise the mast to a worthwhile height.
