70MHz Trophy 2006

Entries were virtually unchanged from 2005 and despite no reports of any Sporadic E Conditions into Europe, it was encouraging to see over 200 callsigns appearing in the received logs. An interesting observation from the entrant logs is that there were more than twenty other stations QRV who made between 15 and 35 QSO's each. Hopefully some of these stations will consider submitting their logs for future events.

As usual the Open Section saw a close fight for top place, with South West Scotland being where this battle was fought out. The Five Bells GM4SIV/P travelled to their usual site at The Mull of Kintyre, The Kintyre Window Cleaners returned to last years hilltop site near Moffat, and The Lothians RS moved further west to operate from close to the Mull of Galloway. QSO totals and multipliers were very close between these groups.

Congratulations to The Five Bells CG, GM4SIV/P, who with a superior accuracy of logging and a higher average points per QSO, take top place and the VHF Manager's Trophy. Last years winners, The Kintyre Window Cleaners CG finish a close second.

Robert Ferguson GD4GNH, entered the Single Operator Fixed Section this year as GD0EMG (The Northern Lights CG), and his section win secures the Four Metre Cup. Last years winner, Bryn Llewellyn, G4DEZ, finishes second.

There's also a new winner in the Single Operator Other Section, namely Peter Croucher, G4YPC/P. Last years winner, Trev Harris, G2KP/P, takes second place.

Chris Gare, G3WOS, is awarded a certificate as the highest placed station in his section using 25W or less and a single antenna.

Congratulations to all certificate winners.

John MacLean, MM0CCC

First contest for over 5 years, very enjoyable! Usual dip in activity/conditions after noon. A few "got aways" - going to need a bigger antenna! No local activity, even on FM, so missed at least 3 easy multipliers.
G0KPW
Started over an hour late but still had fun. Band condx unexceptional
G0VHF/P
Threatened weather did not materialise here - it got in the way of signals though...
G1EHF/P
Average conditions, with no Sporadic E or enhanced tropo. Activity reasonably good, with seemingly more GMs than usual. Wx windy but
G2KF/P
Lots of QSB. Strong winds. Many thanks to all I worked, 73 Trev.
G3JYP
Good, falling off a bit in the middle.
G3LVP
The consistent signals from the Scottish stations were surprising given the prevailing weather conditions with a front laying across the country, possibly this produced some enhancement? It was pleasing to see the level of activity from my old county of Essex whilst activity seemed to be poor from the rest of the South East. Judging by the number of stations worked compared to last year activity seemed higher.
G3MEH
Conditions good to GM at times.
G4AFJ
Good. The large gap in activity was due to sorting out the rotator. Tower Was at lowest height and it certainly seemed to have an effect on the number of stations heard and worked.
G4DEZ
Very poor activity for a Trophy contest and for far too long only warrants about 3 hour total! Less activity than 4m UKAC or cumulatives.
G4YPC/P
Weather fine but conditions poor!!
G6GVI/P
Overcast and breezy, with just a little drizzle. I had a couple of hours to test out a transverter which I'd just repaired for a friend. I was able to work all but one station I heard, but didn't get time to try it on FM too. GD0EMG Good level of activity. Many GM stations.
GM3HAM/P
Fairly flat conditions. Sunny weather, bit windy at start
GM3TCU/P
Conditions seemed about average, activity may have been a trace up on last year. No Es heard and no real tropo Dx. We weren't so lucky with the Wx this year, cloud to the ground followed by persistent heavy rain. We were using new gear; old 'NBS' antennas replaced by DK7ZB 6 ele's and the valve PA has finally been retired in favour of a homebrew solid state amplifier. A couple of stns were too weak to copy even after many re-tries but in general the contest was very enjoyable and free of problems (apart from the track up the hill getting so rough that even the 4WD pick-up didn't have enough traction without lots of human assistance).
GM4AFF
Average
GM4SIV/P
Better than last year! Dry & generally average (last yr Sub Avg) Reasonable activity on the band and generally less splatter
GW4EVX/P
Average conditions, reasonable level of activity but contest could be made shorter.
GW4RWR
Warm and moist. Showers. But everyone in good spirits!
M0BPQ/P
Average conds, hrd GM (x2) but no chance with 8w. Pleased to get on at all as I spent most of the morning building a yagi from the junk box. Pleased to report that the DK7ZB design worked first time.
M5ADF
First couple of hours were lively then slowed down.
