First 70 MHz 2008

Activity on four metres remains strong with 96 stations active during the event from DL, EI, G, GD, GI, GM, GW and LX. Only three entrants managed to work half of the active stations. A number of people commented on the lack of activity in the final hour. However 17% of all contacts took place in the final hour and these were critical as a number of the claimed scores were very close. A number of stations with significant QSO numbers chose not to enter the event.

Conditions were generally rated as poor to average with the usual deep QSB. Only two contacts over 500kM were completed.

Logging accuracy was generally good but a number of stations lost significant points. Entrants are reminded that all elements of the QSOs are checked

Congratulations go to the section winners The Northern Lights, GD0EMG, and Paul, GW8IZR. Stations marked (*) will receive certificates.

Thanks to G0UWK for a very useful check log.

Comments from the logs
G0HIK/P
Lot's of fun sigs vy up and down. Lot's of snow during contest. 2hrs would be enough. Only five Q's in last hour.
G1KHX
Average, deep QSB.
G2KF/P
Deep; QSB. Sorry about GM - QRS please. Many thanks to all. GB3ANG S5 to S7 most of the time. Only one GM on CW at 30wpm.
G3JYP
Considering it snowed during most of the contest condx were good. As the HF and VHF contests are run by the same gang surely they should be a time gap between ROPOCO and this contest!
G3LVP
Late start spent first hour fixing a fault with the transverter.
G3MEH
Poor conditions with deep QSB. Activity disappointing but snow in some parts of the UK must have discouraged portables. Part time entry, just over 1 1/2 hours, because of other commitments.
G4ADV/P
We had Rain, Sleet, Hail, Snow, Static Snow, and Sunshine. Poor radio conditions - couldn't hear much, or was it local noise blanking signals out?
G4DEZ
Beautiful day up here Sunshine and 12 degrees, bit different from down South! Thanks everyone for the points sorry about the station with DF in call who tried so hard, and also could not copy the LX who kept calling me!
G4RFR
Poor, Rapid QSB.
G4RYV
Fair with QSB. Attenuation due to snow!
G4SJH
Average conditions but a shame it clashed with Kempton Park rally and the microwave lo-band.
G6GVI
Lying snow soon melted in the sunshine. As I usually operate portable, it was interesting to find which stations I could work from home. I did hear
G2KF/P
, albeit briefly.
G8CUL
Lively at the start with 2" of snow, dead at the end!
G8LZE
Noisy C/H thermostat in the vicinity made operating difficult.
GD0EMG
Sunshine, snow and hail, breezy at times, rain static resulted.
GM4DIJ
Conditions flat
GM4FAM
Not good!
