October 2008 UHF 432MHz-248GHz Contest Results.

Appalling weather conditions with very heavy rain & gale force winds resulted in stations being unable to setup all their equipment. For those that did manage, the weather caused various system faults. Radio conditions were also very poor. On a positive note, surely things can only be better for 2009! A very well done to all those who managed to get on air & congratulations to band winners & runners up especially overall winners John Quarmby G3XDY & Flight Refuelling RS & to runners-up Matthew Cabban G0XDI & Five Bells CG.

Comments from the logs
2E0NEY
70cm: Very poor conditions.
EI9E/P
70cm: Dramatic weather conditions at 2600' ASL. First time I have been in a cloud that was rushing past at 60 mph! Couldn't see further than a few feet and driving rain. Problems with the mast head preamp so really struggled. Weather broke on Sunday gale force winds subsided and the sun came out! Was then able to take down the mast and fix the preamp. That made a big difference, QSO's doubled after on hour or so. Thanks to everyone who beamed out way . All in all a fun weekend :-) 23cm: Faulty mast head preamp but good front end in transverter helped . Worked all we heard.
G0JJG
70cm: Glad I was not in a tent Ant elevation +-10 degrees due to wind bending mast Some good distances at times.
G0XDI
70cm: Very low Activity from UK and lots of nice DLs in the log for a nice change.
G3CKR/P
23cm: Fixed dish feed Sunday morning qrv for 4-5 hrs, still issue with preamp. 13cm: Only QRV for a few hours of trophy.
G3OHM/P
23cm: Major problems with 3cm system resulted in no operation for the first 3.5 hours, and then without full system, had intended to have second antenna system. 13cm: Problems with antenna system and a short circuit on a multi-pole connector for the 23cm system used up valuable time at the start of the event. Not easy to fix in the wind and rain.
G3SVJ/P
70cm: Poor. 23cm: Poor.
G3XDY
70cm: Flat conditions, low UK activity 23cm: Poor tropo and aircraft reflections few and far between on long paths. 13cm: Aircraft reflections few and far between, leading to some DX gotaways such as DF0YY. 9cm: Where were all the stations on 9cm? 6cm: Poor weather and conditions, some RS on Sunday, but activity low. 10cm: Some RS on Sunday, otherwise poor tropo conditions.
G4LDR
70cm: Poor. Low UK activity.
G4RFR/P
Equipment worked, bands were useable, but the the awful wx put off many of the UK stations.
G5B
70cm: Band used to try to locate & lift contacts to 23 & 13Cms. 23cm: Dire - very windy. We started to get reports from Eu of being heard & couldn't hear anything this end. Decided problem was with wind so paused, removed top 8 antennas and raised tower again - Great signals from there on - amazed at what we were able to work. Even a little DX. 13cm: Also Dire - stopped near beginning of contest to ADD more guys to tower in an attempt to hold it steady - wind was taking, lifting and trying to bend the trailer mount. Absolutely awful conditions. Nice to work a handful of German stations under these conditions Thanks ALL.
G8HGN
70cm: Oh dear, poor condx, UK activity and weather.
G8OHM/P
70cm: Beko HLV550 decided to send smoke signals just before contest started, Henry 3CX800 amp fetched, but delayed start, then a bolt sheared on antenna system causing it to rotate with wind direction, further off air time, not help by the wind and rain.
GM3HAM/P
70cm: Weather on Saturday appalling - very heavy rain all day driven by gale force winds. Radio conditions and activity abysmal throughout contest. 23cm: Appalling wx, appalling conditions, appalling activity. Lost PA due to condensation in EHT supply.
M1CRO/P
70cm: WX!! Reduced array to only 4 ants, 5 guys on tower. Activity on the lower bands appeared reduced, radio condx seemed appalling but Top-10 all over 500k! Tent blew open in rest period & soaked PA EHT kit. Game Over! 23cm: Exit one Preamp around 18:00.
