May 144MHz 2009

After a record entry level in 2008, I am very pleased to report that entry levels in 2009 in all but the Open Section are up yet again. The 6 hour sections are proving to be particularly poplar, although there was also a 50% increase in entries to the 24 hour SF Section.

This contest is well overdue some decent weather and radio conditions, but entrants will have to wait another year for that as this year was again described as "average" to "flat" and many people suffered from high levels of static rain QRM.

This year the open section was won by the Black Sheep Contest Group operating from the Isle of Sheppey, with the Colchester Contest Group, located a little further up the coast on The Naze in second place. A mention also for the Trowbridge ARC who achieved a very creditable score from their westerly site.

In the SF Section Bryn, G4DEZ, took the top spot again from his excellent site in Lincolnshire, with Jeremy, G0JJG, in second place, just ahead of an excellent score from Ray, GM4CXM in 3rd.

Once again the only Single Operator portable entry was from Chris, 2E0XLG who braved the elements for the full 24 hours and tripled his score from 2008. Well done!

In the 6 hours others Section congratulations go the Clyde Coast Contest Club, GM6MD/P who won the section with a big score from the site 2300ft ASL. In second place, the meat in a GM sandwich, are the Moors Contest Group who seem to have moved rather a long way east this year! Just behind them in 3rd spot was Mid Lanark ARS, MM0GPZ/P.

The most popular section this year was the 6S Section with 24 entries. At the top was a very close battle between Steve, G3ZVW and Richard, GD8EXI. Steve just came out on top by virtue of a couple of extra mults. In 3rd spot was Steve M5BFL an escapee from the SF Section.

Congratulations and certificates also go to the following,

In the SF Section:

PE1EWR, leading overseas entrant , G3YJR, leading station using 25W or less and a single antenna, 2E0BMO, leading intermediate licensee and M6WOW, leading foundation licensee.

In the 6S Section:

2E0RCV, leading intermediate licensee, G4APJ, leading station using 25W or less and a single antenna and M6CMG, leading foundation licensee.

Finally a thank you to G5LK and G3YMD for their check logs.

Pete G4CLA.

Comments from the logs:
2E0BMO
TNX for all QSOs.I enjoyed the contest.
2E0RCV
Poor condx overall but good to work into GM.
2E0RFX
Seemed fairly good, most stations were strong signals. Could just about here some French stations but not workable. Also seemed like lots more activity than last year?
2E0XLG/P
Not so good conditions. Very heavy rapid QSB. Cheers to all for points and cheers for chat guys. Where was GM4PPT?
G0BWC/P
Sunny spells and heavy showers, with the occasional rainbow!
G0EHV/P
Conditions gradually improved after the start, although not brilliant. WX kind, set up and took down in the sunshine. Some local activity for a change!
G0GWI
Great fun and thanks to all stations worked.
G0JJG
Enjoyable despite condx & weather poor. Struggled with rain static on Sunday
G0KZT
Just giving a few points away.
G1HLT
Poor conditions, lots of rain static. Well done to all portable stations.
G1KHX
wet and windy at times.
G1SHM/P
Some 'DX', quite a lot of activity, but slow at times.
G2BQY/P
Very wet & windy, bent a pole putting up mast. Periods of static rain. Conditions generally poor, with some dx. A very enjoyable club event which might inspire even more of our members to be active in the UKAC!
G3PIA
Slow and noisy at times....
G3TTC
Condx unstable
G3VER/P
Good fun. Seemed a bit quiet on Saturday, but got going on the Sunday.
G3VQO
worked all I heard (both of them!)
G3YJR
Flat condx and deep QSB to the south. One German heard but not worked. EI9JU heard of the back of the beam! MS? Electrostatic rain gave plenty of time for tea-breaks. Glad I wasn't back-packing!
G4APJ
Flat, but plenty of activity
G4DEZ
Poor conditions
G4DSP/P
Static Rain; QRM from neighbor welding; QSB & some strange QTF's made life very interesting. Although no other club members than MHZ & me, there was a promise of the club Chairman being active on 2m next month but no time today - let's hope we get some more support for the UKAC.
G4HHJ/P
Just a couple of hours of operating. Very slow going after about 21.00 Z.
G4RYV
Poor conditions, deep QSB, Heavy Local QRM and Static rain interference. Glad I was indoors out of the weather!
G4XPE
Flat conditions with long deep qsb. I work more in 2.5 hours in the Tuesday UKAC contests than in nearly 6 hours in this one!
G5FZ/P
Excellent Contest Good Activity
G5LK
Flat, windy with static rain. Highlight was a 2I0 in Belfast
G7JJZ
Just a quick play - good contact considering the power!
G7RIH
Server static Rain for one or two hour but some good DX into Ireland and Scotland
G7SKR
Problem with aerial. It seemed to work better backwards.
G8HGN
Unable to give this a serious go due to family commitments. 2+ hrs on Sunday, but some nice DX given condx.
G8SRC/P
We entered a small station due to a reduced number of operators.
G8VER/P
Split operation this time 'A' and 'B' teams to add activity. More activity than expected. Static rain, showers etc. with flat condx. We like flexibility of multiple 6H (+ 24H).
GD8EXI
About average but some very deep QSB on Sunday making it very difficult to complete with many stations.
GJ7DNI
poor to mid
GM6MD/P
Band conditions seemed not bad, weather dry from start to finish. Thanks to all who worked us.
M0BAA/P
Late on air due to HF transceiver failure and antenna fault. Weather windy, rainy, muddy, poor! Conditions flat, activity low but some good QSOs/QRBs were obtained.
M0MCG/P
Perished fuel pipe on generator so resorted to small generator so ran on reduced RF power Damaged 1 yagi in wind even before it was on the mast! Very enjoyable contest - good activity but conditions fairly flat, shame the sporadic E appeared after the contest!!
M6CMG
Very flat or I chose the wrong times to be on.
M6WOW
FAIR CONDITIONS AT HOME STATION. QSB PREVALENT ACROSS 144MHZ SSB 1ST VHF EVER CONTEST ENTRY. I USED MY SOTA PORTABLE STATION IN MY BACK GARDEN.
MM0CCC/P
Hard going from so far NW but nice to work so far down into the UK under fairly flat cndx. Could have done with more time on air.
MM0GPZ/P
Used event to test antennas for VHF FD. Not very successful. More experimentation needed.
