144MHz CW 2010

Last year saw the highest ever entry level to this contest by a considerable margin, and this year was only three down on that total. Most of the activity, as usual, was in Central Europe, where the Europe - wide Marconi Memorial Contest runs concurrently. All UK logs have been forwarded to ARI, the Italian society that runs this contest.

Most stations found conditions `abysmal', `poor', `dreadful'; GM4VVX commented, `Worst conditions ever. 21 hours before 1st callsign heard!' However G4C found propagation generally good!

There was just one entrant in the 24 hour Open section again this year. Essex CW Amateur Radio Club G4C, who are newcomers to this event, made a very respectable score.

The 24 hour Single Operator Fixed section was won convincingly by regular entrant Dave Edwards G7RAU. Joe Butt G0JJG was in second place.

In the 6 hour Open section the Windmill Contest Group, regular winners of this section, were absent for the first time ever on record (since 1997). This year Dale Harvey G3XBY/P took first place, with DeMontfort Unversity Amateur Radio Society M2A in second place.

John Lemay G4ZTR won the 6 hour Single Operator Fixed section by a good margin. John has taken part and been either first or second in his chosen section every year on record for this contest. David Butler G4ASR was in second place.

Checklogs gratefully received from G3NYY/P, G3Z, G4DPF, DK0ZB, HA4FV, HA6W, M0CES.

Comments from the logs:
G0JJG
Poor conditions, well below average on Saturday evening Improved slightly on Sunday morning with good signals from DL. Low UK activity, called cq inland with very few replies, also very few continentals beaming to G so hard work raising stations off the back of their antennas. Hard work and slow going.
G3NYY/P
Tropo conditions slightly better on the Saturday evening; completely flat on Sunday. Some interesting DX heard in short meteor bursts. Very low activity from UK.
G3TCU
Condx poor (particularly to the North) and UK activity low
G3VYI
Just put up new beam found the contest !! Good to work EU with new ant few G's Not much heard to north..
G3XBY/P
Conditions were flat. QSB and hefty meteor pings made life difficult. With no strong stations nearby receiving was a joy.
G3Z
Diabolical conditions.GB3VHF hardly readable most of the time. Very few UK stations on. Worked one F, a DL and a PA. Took several minutes to work one south coast station.
G4ASR
Dreadful conditions. Very few UK stations active.
G4C
QSB at times Good propagation generally
G4HGI
dreadful
G4RYV
Very poor conditions,noisey at times.
G4XPE
Abysmal propogation and low activity.
G7RAU
Wind, static rain, hailstones and no tropo. Very hard work with deep qsb but still good fun.
GM4VVX
Worst condx ever. 21 hours before 1st callsign heard ! Determination paid off eventualy with 2 qso.
GW4ERW/P
Weekend break in Cardigan so took opportunity to operate from local high spot! Excellent WX. Poor conditions. Low level of activity.
GW8IZR
Enjoyable six hours S&P on Sunday morning. No tropo really but nice to work old friends.
