50MHz Trophy 1998

Another year with widespread sporadic E openings provided lots of interest for everyone. It was quite a surprise to receive an entry from EH8BYR - perhaps better known as Terry, G0TYN. It was also surprising how many of his contacts could be cross checked against the UK based logs.

A lot of multipliers were lost, possibly operators were not used to the range of unusual accents. There were also widespread instances of valid callsigns being logged with the locator of a different station in the same area; it must have been quite hectic at times.

In section M, the Northern Lights repeat their clear victory of last year and retain the Telford Trophy, although the chasing pack are not so far behind. In section S EH8BYR has the highest 'raw' score of all entries, and the second highest overall from a very modest station. Roger, G4BVY retains the Six Metre Cup as the leading UK entrant. It was a pleasant change to receive more than a solitary Listener entry - congratulations to David Whittaker who leads the group. The six hour section receives little support this year, as last, presumeably the sporadic E openings brought everyone out for both days.

Steve Thompson G8GSQ

An entry from GW0GEI was received too late to be included in adjudication. The claimed score was 125401km, 78 mults, total 9781278.
