RSGB Contest Results Overall UKAC 2014
v4.145 by G4CLA

The UK Activity Contests are run throughout the year on Tuesday evenings. Each week a different band or set of bands are activated by a large number of enthusiastic stations. For some, Tuesday night means radio activity night and come hell, high water, rain, snow,  even more rain or sun they are sure to be heard on the bands. Other engagements, like family holidays are either scheduled around the Tuesday night commitment, or the radio goes on holiday with them! Your scribe must admit to having become one of these “addicts” during 2014 and like many others has enjoyed helping to make this contest series such a success.

In all, 110 Clubs and 572 stations took part this year and many more were active but didn't enter a log. To do well on one of the individual bands takes a lot of commitment and dedication. To do well in the overall series requires great resourcefulness and determination. For a club, that means motivating your team, week after week, month after month, to be active and to try continually improve their scores. Therefore the teams anywhere near the top of the final overall results table are certainly worthy of our admiration.

In first place and winners of the Bolton Wireless Club Trophy after repeating their success of 2013, are the Travelling Wave CG, who won 5 of the 6  bands. Once again the excellent scores from their geographically dispersed team members proved unbeatable.

In second place are the Bolton Wireless Club, overall winners of the SHF section and in 2nd place on all the other bands. BWC reduced the gap to 1st place by 500 points this year., so we might see a  tough battle for top place next year. In 3rd place overall are the Spalding & DARS. Also worthy of note is the club in 4th place, Sheffield & DWS, who have entered the UKAC this year for the first time.

In the individual table, a large number of stations have managed to produce very good scores across 5 or even 6 of the bands. Well out in the lead is Keith G4ODA, who has scored well not only on all of the VHF bands but also in the SHF section. This requires real skill as the 6m contest and SHF contests are held on the same night. This year the Contest Committee is pleased to announce that Keith, as the overall winner (single-operator) will receive the Bryn Llewellyn G4DEZ Award, donated by the Harwell ARS. All active VHF contesters will remember Bryn and his outstanding results over many years and it is certainly fitting that the award to the winner of the overall UKAC should bear his name.

The battle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th was very close indeed and changed after the results of the final event on the eve of the final day of 2014, with only a few points separating Bob, G1ZJP  (operating M1MHZ) in 2nd , the Cam-Hams team, G3PYE/P in 3rd and Pete, G4CLA in 4th. Also worthy of a special mention is Mark, M0RXK, who is the highest place single operator who entered all the events /P.

The highest placed Intermediate Licensee is Andy, 2E0VPX and the highest placed foundation Licensee is Andrew, M6RET, congratulations to both.

The current system for calculating the overall individual scores uses the total scores from each band. If an entrant has entered more than one section (E.g. AO and AR) on a band then the total scores from each section on that band are checked and the highest total score is used. This does mean that for those who do enter more than one section on a band some of their scores don't count towards their overall score. From 2015 all scores will be counted, irrespective of the section(s) entered.

Pete,G4CLA.
