RSGB Contest Results Commonwealth Contest 2019
v4.158 by G4CLA

After last year's noticeable dip in entries, it was good to see the number received for the 82nd Commonwealth Contest was back up to 266, not far behind 2017's total of 275.  New for this year was the Open - Remote section which attracted two entries.  There were 16 HQ stations active, unfortunately none of the UK Crown Dependencies were represented but Australia made up the numbers this year with logs from VK2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.  Travellers visited 3B8, C5, C6, V3, VP9, VY2 and ZF.  The following call areas were active but did not send in logs: 7P, 8P, 9J, 9M2, 9M6, 9Y, E5, P2, VK1, VK8, VP8, ZB2, ZD7, ZS2 and ZS6.

In this period of low solar activity 10m again proved to be the most challenging band with very few contacts made, those that were achieved were mainly with HQ stations in the same CCA or in an adjacent CCA.  15m had some good openings to all areas, but the bulk of the traffic was once again on the three lower bands.

Leading the Open Unassisted section and winner of the Senior Rose Bowl is Jeff Briggs VY2ZM followed by ZF2CA (G4CWH) in second place.

The leader of the Restricted Unassisted section and winner of the Junior Rose Bowlfor the third year running is Peter Hobbs G3LET, this year operating as VP9I, followed by C56DF (G3XTT) in secondplace.

The leading UK&CD Open Unassisted section entry and winner of the Colonel Thomas Rose Bowl is Don Beattie G3BJ.

The leading UK&CD 12 hours duration Unassisted entry and Ross Carey Rose Bowl winner is Keith Kerr GM4YXI.

The leading UK&CD Restricted Unassisted entry and winner of the John Dunnington Trophy is Darren Collins MW7X (G0TSM).

First place in the 5W section is Peter Lock M0RYB, who is awarded the Lilliput Trophy, with GM4M (GM4UBJ) in second.

The leading non UK&CD 12hrs duration Unassisted station and winner of the VP8GQ Trophy isYuri Opinko VE3DZ.

First place in the single operator Open Assisted section is Vlad Milutinovic VE3JM, who wins the Rosebery Shield, followed by VE5MX in second place.

In the Restricted single operator Assisted section, up from second place last year, is Bryan Turner G3RLE.  In second place is VE3VY with a 12 hour entry.

In the Multi operator section VE9ML (ops VE9ML and VE9BK) was placed first, followed by G4WSM (ops G3TJE, G4CXQ and G4KMB).

There were two entries in the new Open-Remote section, VO2AC (VE3FU) was placed first followed by ZL1TM.

A Travellers Award for 2019 goes to Don Field G3XTT, this year he activated the Gambia as C56DF.   A Commonwealth Contest Medal is awarded to Mike Groom VE3VHB.  Mike has been a BERU stalwart since the early 1950s when he was G3GWO.  He moved to Canada in 1957 and became a regular entrant as VE2AYY, achieving leading VE2 in 1992.  Since then Mike has entered as VE3VHB.

Many thanks to all the excellent HQ stations for providing bonus QSOs on every band.  Nick G4FAL operating GB5CC is the overall leading station with 747 QSOs and 144 BCAs.  In second place is Graham G4FNL operating G6XX with 579 QSOs and 124 BCAs.  Last year Australia fielded just one HQ station but really pushed the boat out in 2019 with no less than six!  Top of their list in eighth place overall  is VK7WIA operated by Martin VK7GN.  Canada had four HQ stations on the air, including for the first time VY1RAC.  Their leader was VA3RAC achieving sixth place overall, this year operated by Robert VE3KZ.  All the HQ stations made a significant contribution in QSOs and bonuses.

In the Team competition, Australia One again take the top spot, with one of four entries from Canada in second place.  Australia's winning margin was less than last year so maybe they will be toppled next year?  However, not far behind them chasing hard is Australia Two in third.  World Travellers are in fourth place.
