FT4 International Activity Day 2 April 2022

The inaugural staging of this event attracted 150 entries, two thirds of which were from 31 DXCCs outside of the UK from 5 Continents. A further 15 checklogs were also received.

The event was not without its difficulties and my apologies that teething problems with the uploading software resulted in several entries being initially rejected.  Several entrants commented on the difficulty of obtaining locators and the HF Contest Committee will be reviewing the scoring system before next year's event to address this problem.

It was good to receive several first-time FT4 contest entrants, with one admitting that this was their first ever HF entry.

In contrast to other modes involving the higher HF bands, the vast majority of antennas used were wires (end fed, dipoles or Windoms) or verticals, demonstrating the advantages of FT4 for those with modest stations.  For example, the winners of the UK 10W and 100W single radio sections used a doublet at a height of 5 metres and halfwave dipoles at 10m respectively.

And so, to the results,

In 5 of the 6 categories, the winners were 'head and shoulders' above the competition and only the 10W UK section was closely contested.

In the UK sections, the 100W single radio section was won by Lionel, G5LP with a multi-operator entry, GB2FRA and Ron, G4AWA taking second and third places.

Nick G3DR easily triumphed in the 100W two radio category over runner up Alan, G8OO and third placed Gordon, G3PXT.

Finally, in the 10W section Richard, G4KRW narrowly beat Malcom GU0UVH with a very creditable third place going to Ger, MW7FON.

In the overseas sections Steve and Eva, PJ4DX seemed to be in a different class (as is often the case!) in the 100W single radio section with Janusz, ZS1BHJ and Stan, SP6EIY taking the other two podium places.

In the 100W two radio category, stalwart Dennis, W1UE was the comfortable victor with Fernando, EC3A in the runner up spot and Henk, PC4H in third place.

The 10W section saw Huub, PA3EOU run out the winner with Milan OK1DMP and Sergei YL3FW in second and third places.
