RSGB Contest Results SSB Field Day 2012
v4.158 by G4CLA

Summary:

There were 51 entries this year, which is 6 more than last year and only a few down on the record high of 2010. The Paralympics were in full swing that weekend, which may not have helped numbers. WX was reported as good in most parts of the country. Band conditions were poor and similar to last year. However there was a short opening on 10m at the start of the contest to Asia, the Pacific and Africa, from which some stations in both sections were able to pick up some valuable multipliers.

The issue of the concurrent running of the All Asia contest was again raised by many soapbox comments. The problem is that non-Asia stations calling 'CQ All Asia' will not make a QSO with Field Day entrants from Europe. This is not surprising as they would get no points from a non-Asia QSO, it would waste their time, and it might mess up their log if they entered it.  However Asian stations do get QSO credit for non-Asia QSOs!  They are generally happy to work European /P stations provided we also supply our age, which is the AA contest exchange. Enter what you receive into your log, either serial number or age, and everyone is happy.  So the advice for European /P stations is to make full use of the extra Asian stations on the bands, but don't call non-Asian stations in the AA contest.

Most groups seem to have had fun and an enjoyable weekend with plenty taking advantage of the good weather for socialising.

Results:

There were 16 entries in the Open Section, which was headed up by Bristol CG, G6YB/P, who stepped up their game this year with a new HF antenna.  In contrast East Notts CG, G3TBK/P, had problems with their HF antenna, but still managed to take second place. They narrowly edged Buchan CG, MM0AOQ/P, into third place on multipliers.  Last year's Open Section winners Cray Valley RS, G3RCV/P, were not taking part this year due to their involvement with the Olympics.  Bristol CG will be awarded the Northumbria Trophy.

The Restricted Section had 35 entries and the results demonstrate the importance of multipliers.  The winner this year is Three As CG, GW0AAA/P, who squeezed Adrian, MW1LCR/P, into second place. GW0AAA/P had a lower score from QSOs, but multipliers won the day. It was a similar situation between third and fourth places.  Central Contest Assoc., G3SJJ/P, were in third place with a better multiplier tally than Worthing & District ARC, G3WOR/P, in fourth place in spite of their significantly higher QSO total.  Three As CG will be awarded the G3PSH Memorial Trophy.

Unfortunately one station was unaware of General Rule 6(a) which prohibits the use of a Special Prefixes. A penalty of 10% of has been applied to their final score.  Two other stations who were unware of General Rule 4(f) on self spotting have received a warning. Encouragingly no stations that have been warned previously have appeared on the radar this year.

Notes on adjudication:

The adjudication was conducted by Alan G3XSV and independently verified by Quin G3WRR.

Adjudication accuracy was helped by over 350 logs received from other European countries who run their own Field Days, and from the IARU Region 1 contest administrators, DARC. This provided a database of approx. 135,000 contacts that were checkable. Even those contacts that did not involve a UK station at either end help our adjudication software identify systematic logging issues and create a fuller picture of who was on the bands, where and when.

Continued enhancement of the RSGB's adjudication software now makes it even easier to indentify stations that may have repeatedly put incorrect information in their logs either by their error or due to logging software issues.  Typical examples are: sending serial numbers one out from what is logged, logging the incorrect band, and omitting /P from their callsign.  In the past many of these may have been assumed to be the receiving station's fault, or in the case of band errors both would lose the points. The tool helps identify serial offenders (excuse the pun!) and more accurately assess who was at fault.

Another advance is that certificate winners can now download their certificate direct from the result web page.
