RSGB Contest Results SSB Field Day 2020
v4.181 by G4CLA

SSB Field Day this year took place with Covid-19 restrictions in place throughout the UK&CD and in many other countries around Europe and the rest of the world.  This necessitated a change in the rules to allow fixed stations to take part in a team competition so that there were plenty of UK&CD stations available for the single operator portable stations to contact and those that would normally be part of a multi-op team to participate.  Other IARU Region 1 Societies operated similar policies encouraging fixed station participation resulting in overall QSO numbers that were not much different to previous years at the same point in the solar cycle.

As expected with propagation just on the positive side of the solar minimum (now officially declared to be December 2019) 80, 40 and 20m carried the most traffic, mainly UK and Europe.  However there was some DX about on these bands with North America on 80m, 9M2, E2, JA, PJ, LU, VE, VK and W on 40m and 9M4, 9V, 9Z, A4, A6, B, CE, D4, HS, HZ, JA, PJ, PY and VK on 20m.  15m provided some UK and European contacts on Sunday morning plus a DX bonus of 5B4 and HZ.  There were a few short openings on 10m to Europe.

Logging was generally good, most errors were in callsigns followed by received serial numbers.  As in previous years logs were received from other IARU Region 1 Societies allowing more rigorous cross checking.

With no inspections and the restrictions on portable operation trophies have not been awarded this year but the usual certificates are available to download.  The one-off Club team competition for this year has been won by Cray Valley RS with a team of six, closely followed by Yorkshire Amateur Radio Friends in second and Oxford & DARS in third place.  Congratulations also to the winners of the individual sections:

  • Yorkshire Amateur Radio Friends M0RTQ/P for winning the QRP Unassisted Portable
  • Hereford ARS G9X/P operated by M1LCR for winning the 100W Unassisted Portable
  • Cray Valley RS M8C/P operated by G0VJG for winning the High Power Assisted Portable
  • Chorley & DARS M6OXO/P for winning the QRP Renewable Energy
  • Craig M3CRJ for winning the Fixed QRP
  • Colin M0DDT for winning the Fixed 100W
  • Max IZ0VXY the leading non-UK station in the Fixed 100W
  • Graham G4FNL for winning the Fixed High Power
  • Fred K3ZO the leading non-UK station in the Fixed High Power

Let's hope there is a return to the normal rules for next year's event.
