Many thanks for check logs received from G4AJA, PC4C, PH2LB, DL1WTE and G3UFY
1st 144MHz Backpackers Contest 2014
Twenty six stations were on the air for the first session of the Backpackers Contest on 2m a slight reduction on last year. The 3W Backpackers section continues to be the most popular, with the FT-817 dominating the equipment in use. Fewer were tempted to become 10W Hilltoppers -- a section where entrants used a variety of different rigs.
Everyone enjoyed the fine weather, and there was even talk of sunburn in soapbox comments! Conditions generally were described as flat to fair, although this didnt stop some entrants working continental stations as well as making longer distance UK to UK contacts. The best DX came from G8RCZ/P, with a 686 km QSO from just 2.5 watts.
As part of the adjudication process, logs were cross-checked with those from the concurrent May 144MHz contest. Generally log-keeping was good, but please remember that for all RSGB contests times must be kept in UTC (GMT). Timing is generally shown internationally as UTC in contest rules, and a mistake can mean that you will suffer a penalty because of the extra adjudication work. Even worse, you might start too early or too late, and so lose some hard-earned QSOs.
Congratulations to Andrew Vare, G4XZL, who operated from North Wales and won the 3W Backpackers section, and to Keith Haywood, G8HXE, in second place. Paul Selwood, G8BGV, was in Hilltoppers 1st place, and Mike Franklin, G3VYI, operated G4ALE/P to achieve 2nd place.
This is the first of five sessions of the 144MHz Backpackers Contest, with the best three scores counting towards the Backpacker's Trophy for 2014.
Ed Taylor, GW3SQX
