50MHz Trophy Contest

This contest is always made by the conditions served up by the Es gods. 2019 was a good year with most stations getting good propagation within EU and further on both days - though unusually there were no transatlantic QSO's. UK ODX was G4ASR's qso with TA7AM at 3311km.

The early arrival of the Es on Sunday morning caught out a number of stations - even the highly experienced G3MEH notes 'should have set the alarm clock earlier on Sunday' as G0VHF/P and others found the band open by 0414 UTC.

Unusually logging inaccuracy made a difference to the outcome in this contest. G0VHF/P managed a commendable 2.67% whereas G8T's was 9.6%, sufficient to change the result. And it was almost the undoing of G4ASR (11.55%) against G8X (3.46%). Accurate logging in the heat of a 6m opening is hard work - but as can be seen it can be done. The combination of the adjudication software and the R1 logs (which were again used) is sufficient to detect and penalise most logging errors. So checking something you thought you heard might slow you down but might also make a potentially busted qso good. Busted QSO's are worth nothing beyond a misleading impression of how well you are doing.

There were 101 entries (120 in 2018 and 162 in 2016) so this contest is gradually losing it's popularity. The effect of this is most noticeable in Multi-Op (7 entries against 13 in 2018) but is noticeable in most other sections too.
