70MHz CW CONTEST - 13/5/18

The number of entries in the 2018 70MHz CW Contest was 33 (two in section AL, 20 in section AO, 11 in section AR and one checklog - reflecting this year's  change in section structure). It is gratifying to see that, after a 33% increase in entries between 2016 & 2017, this year there was a further increase of 18%.

A total of 77 valid callsigns appear in the logs, from 8 DXCC entities and 30 big squares.  The best DX (at 802km) took place between GM4ZUK/P and PA5Y.

Congratulations go to the section leaders:

  • Open - GM4ZUK/P
  • Restricted - PA5Y
  • Low Power - G4DBN.

Congratulations also to Conrad PA5Y as the leading non-UK&CD entrant.

Entrants' opinions on conditions were fairly evenly balanced between poor and slightly above normal, particularly towards the end, but there was general agreement that activity was quite good. A few stations commented that the band was noisy but, unusually for 4m, once there were no reports of QSB! This, together with good weather, led to an overall favourable view of the event, described by one entrant as 'a pleasant little contest'.
