RSGB Contest Results VHF Championship 2018
v4.158 by G4CLA

The VHF Contests' Championship aims to provide an overall result for the year - based on a representative selection of contests. The contests that count towards the Championship are: March 2m/70cm (the overall 2 band normalised score), 432 MHz Trophy, May 144 MHz, 50 MHz Trophy, 144 MHz Low Power, 432 MHz Low Power, 144 MHz Trophy, 70 MHz Trophy, 1.3 GHz Trophy & 2.3 GHz Trophy.

All stations entering these events are automatically included in the Championship. There is a Single Operator Fixed Station section (SF), a Single Operator Fixed Low Power section [less than 25W to a single antenna] (LP) and and Open section [Groups and Portables] (O) and an AFS section which accumulates all the  scores of individual club members in each contest to give an overall total for the club.

All entries have been re-allocated and re-normalised from the original sections and points scores in each qualifying contest. The re-normalisation is against the best scoring station/group in each individual Championship section for each event.

All Single Fixed stations are entered and tabulated into the SF section. Stations qualifying for the LP section are also entered and tabulated into the LP section.

This is only the second year in which the Championship results have included the AFS section, where all club members scores are summed to give a total for the club. Harwell ARS were the runaway winners of the section last year, but they found themselves in a much tighter battle this year, with Hereford ARS, placed a lowly 24th last year, putting in a very strong performance. By end of the year it was Harwell who eventually came out on top, gaining the maximum 1000 points in no less than 5 events to win the VHF Championship AFS Trophy. Congratulations to both societies  and to Sheffield DWS and the Five Bells Group who had a very close battle for third and fourth.

The Open section played out in a similar way to last year, with the Vecta CG having a very strong showing for most of the year, especially in the two Low Power Contests. But it was again the Colchester RA who eventually won the section by gaining a maximum 1000 points in the last two events of the year, no doubt helped by the promotion of the 13cms and 23cms Trophy events to full qualifying contests this year.

There was a very close contest for top spot in the Single Operator Fixed Station section this year. From the start it was clear that David G4ASR and John G3XDY were both intent on making a serious attempt at taking the trophy away from last year's winner, Roger G3MEH. As the year rolled on it looked like it would be David who would win out, but the positions changed after the very last two events of the year, both of which were won by John. The final totals are very close indeed, with the John Pilags Trophy going to John by the smallest of margins. Other winners of individual events include Keith G4ODA, John G0ODQ and Tim G4FJK.

In the Low Power section, Roger, M0OMB retains the first place he gained last year to win the Low Power Championship Trophy. Roger entered ten events during the year, winning three of them. There was a very close battle for second place, between Graham G3YJR and David G8LZE. As in the other sections it was the UHF events at the end of the year that proved decisive and allowed Graham to take second place.

Congratulations also go to Phil 2E0DGP and Sue, M6XAK, who are awarded certificates as the highest placed Intermediate and Foundation Licensce holders in both the SF and LP Sections.

Pete Lindsay, G4CLA.
